Victorian Cameo Brooch 18k Gold Persephone and Hades

Perhaps she is Persephone, being swooped up by Hades on his golden chariot? Are those four immortal, sable back horses pulling them along? Alas, poor Persephone, her beauty was her undoing, when Hades saw her picking flowers in Sicily, he was so overwhelmed by her that he abducted her and drug her down into the underworld. Fear not, though, Persephone thrived in Hell and co-ruled over it with Hades by her side.

This fantastic classical cameo is just the kind of mythological scene that Italian carvers were perfecting when this beauty was done in the mid-1800s. A traveler visiting these lands most likely brought this came home with him to England and had it set into this lovely 18 karat gold frame so that it could be worn as a brooch. This large brooch is sure to garner interest every time it’s worn, a true conversation starter and a true work of wearable art.

The brooch measures 48.7 mm north to south and 57.8 mm across, it’s 10.9 mm deep. The carved shell is beautifully detailed, I just loved the action captured in the legs of the horses! This brooch is marked with ’18ct’, I think it was made in England in about 1870-80, it weighs 16.8 grams. The cameo is in wonderful condition with no signs of cracks or crazing.
