Victorian Cameo Brooch Roman Soldier Gold Frame

$ 680.00

– Sold Out
This roman soldier was likely carved into this shell in Italy in the 1880s, he was likely picked up by some English traveler, perhaps a woman traveling with her maiden Aunt. He was likely brought back to England where she took him to the jeweler and had him placed in this simple, golden frame. She would pull it out and wear it often, as a reminder of that time, that time when she was young and carefree and traveling the cities of Europe.

This wonderful cameo features a Roman Soldier, a very popular motif at the time, he is reimagined with flowing locks and a rugged beard and is beautifully carved with wonderful details and great, wistful expression. The brooch measures 40.5 mm from top to bottom and 32.2 mm across, it is 8.4 mm thick including the pin. This one is marked ‘9ct’ on the reverse for 9 karat gold, it weighs 7.4 grams.
