Victorian Carved Carnelian Signet Ring 18k Gold

Milan in the summer is a sight to see. I know, it sounds so obvious, the sun, the clothes, the food. Have you tasted the fruit from San Marco square? Or seen the scarecrow in the Brera botanical garden? Wait until you wander Via Fiori Chiari at the antiques market on a Sunday morning. You’ll see glorious things. You might even come across a ring like this, as I did, and instantly fall in love.

This antique signet ring was handcrafted in Birmingham, England around 1878. It’s a striking Victorian piece with a juicy orange carnelian intaglio showcasing a floral motif with Arabic letters. The carnelian measures 15 x 12 x 2.5 mm. This piece has been fully hallmarked as it bears the gold purity mark, “18”, the origin mark for Birmingham, the crown mark for England and 18 karat gold, and the date letter, “d”. It also bears a maker’s mark that reads, “A&Co”. This ring is a size 8 and it weighs 6.8 grams.

Oh the marvelous and the mysterious. if anyone out there can help me decipher the Arabic on this ring it would be greatly appreciated! I’d love to understand this precious piece a little more.
