Victorian Creel Basket with Fish Silver Earrings

Not everything in the Victorian era had a secret message or symbolic meaning. There were some unexpected designs during the 19th century that ladies decided to wear simply because they liked them. The 1860s led to an explosion of daytime earring trends, as the fashion was now to have the hair up and behind the ears, exposing a perfect space for dangling jewels. Designers had a field day handcrafting tiny tambourines, oil lamps, pea pods, cherries, yachts, and of course, baskets of fish, for ladies to don.

These antique Victorian fish basket, or creel, earrings were handcrafted around 1890 in silver. They feature a fun motif of fish tails sticking out of baskets, as though someone just pulled them from the water! This adorable pair weighs 5.1 grams. Each earring measures 30 x 16.6 mm. They bear no marks and have been acid tested.

Not just for daytime wear anymore, these adorable Victorian earrings can be worn late into the night with jeans, heals, and a glass of wine.
