Victorian Curb Link Bracelet 9k Gold

Before gold was easily and widely available, jewelers had to be talented and creative to make what the had go as far as it could. When it came to jewelry with a ‘chunky’ look, like this bracelet, they had to first roll the gold into a thin sheet and then form it into a tube, usually using pitch as the filling in the center. Then the tube would be cut into equal lengths and each length formed into a link, when it was assembled it would be gently heated to allow the pitch to flow out. The result was a piece which looked heavy and opulent and yet was actually light weight and very durable.

Hand crafted in 9 karat gold in about 1890, this lovely bracelet is embossed on the top of every other link and can be worn with the embossed side up or flip it over for a perfectly smooth look. The links are 11x13x5 mm each and the fully engraved lock that closes the bracelet is 18x29.3x3.6 mm; the lock is engraved with an ivy leaf design, a motif that bears the sentiment ‘I cling to thee’. This bracelet is a generous 8 inches in length and weighs 22.4 grams. The links are marked with ‘9c’ for the gold content as is the lock, the lock also has the makers mark ’S. Bros’.
