Victorian Double Heart Crown Sapphire Diamond Brooch Pendant

During the Victorian era, heart symbolism soared in popularity. Couples used the double heart as a betrothal icon. It simply meant two hearts, together, bound as one. A double heart design symbolized true and everlasting love, just as two intertwining hearts have no beginning or end, similar to the infinity symbol. If a crown is found on top, as it is with this pendant, it means, “the reigning of fidelity over a marriage”. Diamonds represented endurance of love while sapphires meant fidelity.

This antique Victorian sapphire and diamond heart brooch-pendant was handcrafted in England, around 1860 by the famed company of Edward Tessier. It features a double heart motif, topped with a crown of diamonds and sapphires. The stones are set in sterling silver and backed in 18 karat gold. The three bright blue natural sapphires in the crown total 0.65 carats. Fifty white and clean old European cut diamonds make up the hearts and crown of this sparkling accessory, and add up to a total of approximately 2 carats. The piece can worn as a brooch or the pin stem can be screwed off and the catch folded down to be worn as a pendant. This pin/pendant has been acid tested. The overall measurements are 34 x 28 mm; and this piece weighs 35.9 grams.

The piece comes in it’s original fitted box which shows the retailer as “Edward Tessier, Jeweller and Silversmith, 26 New Bond Street, London, Mourning Ornaments”.
