Victorian Double Silver Tiger Claw Shaped Brooch Pin with Locket Back

“The Sun Never Sets on the British Empire.”

The ‘Honourable East India Company’ was formed by Queen Elizabeth in the year 1600 in an effort to open up trade between Britain and the East.  Over the next two and half centuries it would grow into a vast entity which conducted over half the world’s trade.  It would also form its own private armies and exercise military power, essentially leading to the British take over of India in 1858.  The Victorians reveled in their world power and often visited and even settled in the corners of their far flung Empire.  When traveling to their colonies, it was typical for the English to bring home prizes and souvenirs, in India nothing was as popular to bring home as something from the Tiger, be it pelts, claws or even a fully stuffed beast.  The claws were often set into elaborate jewels, bracelets, necklaces, cufflinks, pendants, and brooches of claw were sometimes made in India, and other times were brought back to England to be fabricated there.  When claws couldn’t be had the English jewelers were happy to imitate the shape in silver or gold, such as can be seen here.

This wonderful double tiger claw look-alike brooch is handcrafted fully in silver and the back is set with a small locket that was most likely meant to hold a lock of hair, rather than a photo. The workmanship is quite lovely and detailed and certainly shows a nod to Indian motifs. The brooch measures 1 inch from top to bottom and 1 and a half inches wide, it has a C clasp and extended pin stem, typical of the Victorian era. While it bears no marks, this wonderful brooch was most certainly made in England, most likely around 1870.  It is in lovely condition, but does have one small ding in the back near the clasp, the front has no dents or dings, just that lovely velvety patina that only Victorian silver seems to achieve. It is unmarked but has been acid tested to verify its 925 (sterling) silver content. It weighs 3 grams.

This is a wonderful piece of history with a lot of charm (and none of the ick factor of the real thing!).
