Victorian Engraved Swallow Bird Brooch

Victorians were deeply inspired by nature, and they especially loved birds. They represented hope, freedom, and rebirth. Swallows were supposedly the first bird to land on a ship when nearing land. They came to represent a safe return. They were like a Fairy God Mother, guiding loved ones home. They symbolized luck and guidance on the course of life and in travels. When an accessory with a swallow was given as a gift, it depicted love. I like to think that a sailor gave this brooch to his sweetheart, showing he loved her, and that soon, he would return home sweet home.

This antique Victorian silver bird brooch was handcrafted in England around the year 1900. It bears a swallow bird motif inside an engraved frame. It measures 39 x 33 x 12 mm and weighs 6.7 grams. This piece contains no marks and has been acid tested.
