In today’s world with GPS in every smartphone getting lost seems an easy problem to solve; however, when this fantastic fob was made, getting lost meant more than a mere inconvenience, it often meant the difference between life and death.
This wonderful compass fob née pendant is the perfect example of kind of everyday object that the Victorians elevated to a higher form, they felt that if you had to use something every day, be it key or compass, it might as well be beautiful in addition to being functional. This compass certainly is that, one might even call it handsome. With its 18 karat gold casing and rock crystal lenses, it has a weight that speaks of luxury and it’s just that little bit larger than usual, with a great feel in the hand. It works, too, so if you should become lost and your cell battery dies, you can still perhaps find your way home.
The compass was hand crafted around 1870, it is not hallmarked (which in this case probably means it was custom made) but was almost certainly made in England, we’ve tested it as 18 karat gold. Overall, it measures 35.5 mm from top to bottom and 24.8 mm across, it’s 8 mm deep and can be used from either side. This beautiful piece could be worn on a chain around the neck or from a gentleman’s watch chain as a fob, which is probably how it was originally intended, it weighs 11.3 grams.
