Victorian Love Knot Jet Black Earrings

Jet, a brown coal formed from fossilized driftwood from the Jurassic Period, has been used for thousands of years to craft all types of jewelry as well as personal objects. When rubbed, it produces an electric charge, much like amber. It was used as a talisman and given the nickname “black amber” for this very reason. The blackness of its color made it popular for mourning jewelry during the Victorian era.  Queen Victoria wore Whitby jet after the death of her dear Prince Albert. As a matter of fact, Whitby jet was the only jewelry permitted at court for the time being.

These stunning antique Victorian drop jet earrings were handcrafted in England around 1850. Each earring showcases a daisy motif made of Whitby jet. This pair was likely crafted specifically for wear during the mourning period, a time that could last up to two years and required an all-black wardrobe. The wires are made of silver and have been acid tested. Each earring measures 98 x 34.5 mm and together they weigh 18.4 grams.

Take a piece of the Victorian era home with these lovely jet drop earrings!
