Victorian Niello Frame Brooch Pin with Instant Ancestors

Oh, my gosh, how much do you love these two?  That hair, those eyes, so young in a time where 25 was considered getting on.  I like to refer to pieces like this as coming with ‘instant ancestors.’  Sure, you could swap them out for ancestors of your own, but would you really want to?

This fantastic niello frame brooch is quite a rare find. Niello is a special type of enameling that was quite common in Victorian era jewels, a mix of metal alloy powder was used instead of glass powder in a similar technique.  This one is accented with rose gold stars.  The frame opens in the back, it’s a bit rough on one edge of the back, see photos for detail.  The brooch measures 1 1/8 inches across and 1 1/4 inches high, it weighs 4.6 grams.

While it’s unmarked, this one tests as sterling silver.  It was most certainly made in England, right around 1870-1880.
