Victorian Ruby Pearl Ring Dated 1865 15k Gold

$ 2,500.00

Purchasing a ring like this one would have been no small feat in 1865. You couldn’t order it online or even by phone or mail. You had to take your small gems and, in this case most likely a lock of hair, to your jeweler, a journey by horse that may likely have taken more than a day. Then likely you’d have to come back again a fortnight or more later, to pick it up. The jewelers, likewise, couldn’t order materials easily and so jewels like this one were exquisitely crafted with the least amount of material necessary, resulting in a lightweight beauty like this one.

This ring would originally have had a locket back, likely a piece of woven hair under rock crystal. The locket bit is long gone by now. The ring is set with four creamy pick kissed pearls and four round faceted ruby gems. This ring was made in Birmingham, England in 1866 and also has marks for 15 karat gold. This ring is a size 9.25, it’s rather large as these go, perhaps it was made to be worn over a glove. The ring measures 13.4 mm north to south and 21 mm across, it sits 4.5 mm off the finger and narrows to 2.2 mm at the back fo the band. This ring weighs 3 grams.
