Vintage 18k Gold Birds Pendant, European c.1950

"Put a bird on it."  It's not a new sentiment, in fact, using birds as a motif on jewels, furniture, silver, textiles, and more is an idea that goes back to cave painting. The Egyptians were masters of it, the Victorians excelled at it, and there has rarely (if ever) been an age when makers of decorative objects of all kinds didn't share this same sentiment. Personally, I'm a fan!

This fantastic French pendant from the 1930s has three birds on it (because three is better than one!!). It is a lovely soft-bloomed coin of yellow 18 karat gold sent into a shiny slightly rosy decorative hexagon, also of 18k gold. The piece is marked all over with a maker's mark on the bale and some assay marks on the back that are a bit hidden under one of the prongs, the marks indicate the 18k gold content, but we've acid tested it just to be sure. It measures 28.5 mm from E to W, and 30.3 mm from N to S, (34 mm including the bale). It weighs 5.8 grams.
