Did you know that amethyst has long been associated with Dionysus, the Greek God of wine? The story goes that Dionysus, in his regular drunken state, was pursuing a maiden named Amethystos, who rebutted his affection. She prayed to the gods that she might remain chaste and pure and the goddess Artemis answered her prayers by changing her to a pillar of pure white stone. When Dionysus saw this, in his grief he poured his wine over her, turning the stone to purple. This myth gave the ancients the idea that wearing amethyst would protect the wearer from drunkenness, and the word Amethyst translates as ‘not drunk’.
