They sat in their pews and waited for him to begin. He stood in front of the congregation with his sermon handwritten on the sheet of paper in front of him. Typically, he’d start out with a bible verse themed for a modern-day lesson of love and forgiveness. Today however, the summer sun was shining through the stained-glass windows, so he went to the old church piano and started to play a song. One by the one the congregation began to sing along to this melody of praise. By the second verse, everyone was standing and singing beautifully to Amazing Grace.
This vintage Presbyterian cross was handcrafted in sterling silver in London, 1933. This wonderful pendant was made by J Wippell & Co Ltd, most likely for a priest or a clergyman. It is hallmarked with a leopard head, for the London Assay Office, a date code ‘s’ for 1933, a lion for England and sterling silver. The maker’s mark reads, ‘JW & Co. Ltd’. J. Wippell & Co Ltd was established in 1908. They specialized in ecclesiastical silver. This larger sized cross weighs 10.3 grams and measures 63 mm long, 40 mm wide and is 1.7 mm thick.
