Vintage Knotted Rope Band Ring, 18k Gold, Hallmarked 1971

The year was 1971, the Beatles had broken up, Rod Stewart and Carole King ruled the charts. Although those Bee Gees were on the rise, disco wasn't quite king.  The fashionable people were moving towards wide leg pants, jumpsuits, high-heeled boots and chains, lots and lots of chains, even on the finger a rope of gold was the perfect accessory!

This handcrafted and absolutely fabulous ring was one of my favorite finds on my last trip to England. It's not a cast ring, but rather a knotted rope of individual strands of fine gold fully articulated and beautifully made. It's the perfect, not to heavy but, oh, so substantial weight of 10.9 grams. Hallmarked inside the band with '750' for the gold content, along with the Tudor rose and a capital scrolling 'D', indicating it was assayed in Sheffield, England in 1971, it also has a Mercury Head mark on the outside of the band indicating that it was made in France for export.  I've had it acid tested just to be sure. It's a size 6ish  US and as it is a wide ring, it may fit a 5.5-6.5 US finger pretty comfortably. It would be pretty tough to resize unless you don't mind having a bit that doesn't match. The ring is 11 mm wide and 3 mm thick.

I've been really getting into vintage jewelry from the '60s and '70s, it's a bit new to me as I've always been a very Victorian girl, but I have to admit, some of it, like this ring, is just so fabulous!!
