Vintage Moonstone and Silver Ring

The fireplace is crackling, the chandelier has been lit, the house is filled with cheer. Wintertime has its own magic, and it makes me reach time and again for that most magical of gems, the moonstones. There is something beguiling about this stone, how does it do it? How does it trap the light of the moon and holds onto it, only revealing it in the right light, at the correct angle. Magical, indeed.

This wonderful silver Arts & Crafts era ring was hand crafted in England. The very knowledgable seller from whom I purchased it thought that it was the work of William Thomas Blackband, but in truth I could not find a mark. That being said, the twisted wire-work and method of construction of the back of the band are typical of his work. The lovely and smooth cabochon moonstone is kissed with blue and measures 13.4x10x3.2 mm. It is set in s gorgeous silver mount that measures 14.7 mm north to south and 12 mm across the face, it sits 8 mm off the finger. This ring is a size 7.5 US and is not resizable, it weighs 4.8 grams.

This winter landscape of a ring was made in about 1900, I purchased it in London.
