The internet is a wonderful thing. Even though my niece and nephew laugh at me when I tell them that I’m older than Google, it’s true. Very true. I remember a time when we weren’t so connected, when looking something up meant that you went and found the right letter volume of the Encyclopedia Brittanica. Now days googling is a verb and we can connect to anyone, anywhere, anytime.
This was brought home to me in my early days of online sales when I posted a photo on a very early Facebook page of a piece of jewelry by one of my favorite artists, Norman Grant. It hadn’t been up for long when I got a message, it was from Norman’s son. He was sitting in a pub with his dad and the post came up and he showed it to Norman who was delighted to see it. It was such a lovely connection. Mr. Grant died a few years ago and I was so sad to hear it, but his wonderful jewelry lives on.
Even though some of Norman Grant’s jewelry was a bit mass produced this particular necklace appears to be a one-off and it shows in the quality, it’s a nice weighty piece with great attention to details. the colors are lovely, all pinks and purples and it has a bit of an asian twist to the design. It’s hallmarked for Edinburgh and was made in 1972, it has the NG for Norman Grant.
This lovely necklace was hand crafted in sterling silver and enamel. The chain is 23 inches long and the drop measures 63 mm from top to bottom and 36.8 mm across at the widest point. This necklace weighs 14 grams. The metal screw style clasp is original to many of Grant’s pieces, although these days it has often been replaced with a silver ring clap, it’s nice to have the original clasp.
