Antique Art Nouveau Cameo Brooch in Black Hills Gold Frame
Early on in my antique jewelry career, another dealer gave me a bit of good advice about cameos, he said only to buy scenic cameos and cameos of Pretty Ladies. It’s true, there’s just something about a pretty lady, and this one is quite a classical beauty indeed!
This wonderful Victorian cameo is set into a frame of 14 karat gold in an intricate combination of rose and green colored gold with beautifully engraved gold. This cameo was likely brought back from a Grand Tour of Europe, purchased most likely in Italy in about 1900-1910. The frame is what’s called ‘Black Hills Gold’ which was being mined at the time in the Black Hills of North Dakota. This Art Nouveau beauty measures 60.8 mm north to south and 49.8 mm across at the widest point, it’s 12 mm deep and weighs 18.1 grams. It’s marked ’14k’ on the reverse.
