When you’ve been buying jewelry for as long as I have, you might find that what excites you most is the unusual! When I came across this bespoke French wedding set, I was excited to my toes.
This set of two contains a hand crafted silver stud plaque (to be worn in a button hole) and a matching silver brooch. The stud features a wolf hound in profile sporting a blue collar and was doubtlessly hand crafted as a special order for it’s original groom and the matching brooch shows the same pup with a pink color, made for the bride.
The two pieces are the same size, they measures 28.6 mm across and 19.6 mm top to bottom, tougher they weigh 17.5 grams. This wonderful set is hallmarked with ‘HR’ and “Bte” (short for ‘brevetè’ or ‘patented’) and also with “SGDG” (which is ‘Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement’ which means that the government was not liable for the working of the piece). This French made set tests as silver and dates to about 1860-70.

I was an imaginative child and was always enamored with animals of myth, the unicorn, the dragon, the cycles and minotaur. I greedily devoured books and movies like the Chronicles of Narnia and the Lord of the Rings; the Neverending Story was one of my favorites along with the Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. So, I guess it’s not unusual that I would find myself drawn to jeweled representations of these beasts as a grownup!
This fantastic brooch depicts what is probably an Amphiptere, a type of winged serpent which is often seen in European heraldry; the Amphiptere is a beast with wings but no legs and the body of snake, usually covered in feathers. It could also be a Wyvern, but as it’s leg-less I’m thinking it’s likely an Amphiptere. The beast has a creamy white pearl clutched in its jaws. This wonderful piece measures 19.8 mm north to south and is 61.5 mm long, it weighs 8.5 grams. The brooch is marked on the pin stem and clasp, which is typical for French pieces, it bears the eagles head purity mark for 18 karat gold as well as a French makers mark.
This beautifully detailed brooch is finished front and back, it could easily be converted to a necklace upon request.

The Royal Order of the Garter was founded in the fourteenth century by King Edward the Third. It was, and still is, the most prestigious order of Chivalry in the United Kingdom, along with the Victoria Cross and George Cross, and is the oldest national order of knighthood in the world. The symbol of the order is the buckled garter.
This fantastic and large Scottish brooch is a wonderful example of the Order. At the center of the brooch is an engraved shield and surrounding it is a large garter with a smooth buckle and elaborately engraved edges. Simple yet stunning, this brooch would be just as lovely on a man as a woman. It is completely unmarked but tests as sterling. The reverse has a ring at the top which probably originally held a safety chain. This impressive brooch measures 61.4 mm from top to bottom and 51.4 mm across, it weighs 29.4 grams. Made in Great Britain in about 1860-70.

It’s not as old as the pieces that I usually buy, but I couldn’t resist the charm and whimsy of this lovely brooch! Hand crafted in Birmingham, England in 1994, this fully hallmarked, sterling silver brooch depicts a fishing rod and reel with a spotted fish hanging from the chain which represents the fishing line. This brooch measures 81 mm across and 19.5 mm north to south at the widest part. This brooch bears the makers mark ‘B.J.M’ and weighs 7.4 grams.

Well, I’ve accumulated a backlog of items and I’m too excited to get them to you to stop and write tales. So, I’m going to go with the idea that a picture is worth a thousand words. Long before cell phones, before cameras could be carried in a pocket or a purse, photographs were expensive and hard to come by; so people often didn’t have images of their loved ones to keep after that person had passed. Instead, they used a lock of hair, often elaborately woven and put under glass. It gave them a memory, a keepsake, of the person that they had lost.
This brooch was made as a memorial to one such person. It would have been worn during the period of mourning, which lasted for a year and then some. The front of this wonderfully hand crafted pin is done in swirls of gold and black enamel and is set with a virtual bouquet of flowers which are accented in creamy white pearls and one small diamond. This brooch has a frame on the reverse which would originally have held the hair of loved one, but which has been removed at some point in its life. The reverse is inscribed with ‘In Memory Of’ and the initials ‘EHC’. This large piece measures 40.7 mm from north to south and 50.9 mm across and weighs 26.2 grams. We’ve carefully acid tested it as being 15 karat gold.
This wonderful piece of history was made during the Georgian era in England, probably dating to about 1830.

If you find yourself in the town of Torre del Greco, on the Gulf of Naples, I highly recommend that you make a visit to La Pizzaccia a top priority. Ask for Federico, the chef, although he’ll probably show up before you can, and let him tell you what to order. The menu changes daily according to what’s fresh and it doesn’t really matter what you get because one dish is just as delicious as the next. Then overindulge a bit in their delicious wine and a bit of gelato and stay overnight in this wonderful Napolese town. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and harbor filled with lovely fishing boats and sparkling seas. Keep in mind, though, that in 79 AD it wasn’t so wonderful, when the horrific eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried the area under tons and tons of debris. What was a life ending event for the ancient Romans would eventually become a boon for the residents of the 18th and 19th centuries as the residents of Torre del Greco used the lava stone deposited by that massive event to carve intricate and detailed cameos which they sold to the tourist trade, especially those taking the ‘Grande Tour’ of Europe during Victorian times.
This wonderful cameo most likely finds its origins in that place and at that time. It depicts the allegory of ‘Love Conquers All’, which is drawn from Ovid and Virgil and features a winged Cupid who has subdued a lion. The cameo is carved in lava stone of a deep putty color kissed with green and is set into a frame of 18 karat gold with a line of graduated pearls at the bottom. The lava carving itself likely dates to about 1870, but the frame is later, probably 1920s. Overall this brooch measures 35.5 mm north to south and 42.4 mm across and weighs 13.3 grams. The pin stem has a safety clasp for added security and some care should be taken with this piece as lava is a somewhat fragile material. The patination of this piece adds to its beauty and I would not recommend cleaning the face of the brooch at all.

The Metropolitan Opera house opened with a performance of 'Faust' on October 22, 1883; on Broadway in New York City. The opera house had been formed and built by the likes of the Vanderbilts, the Roosevelts and the Astors as a response to being shut out of the Academy of Music due to their new-money status. On opening night, and every night for years to come, the private boxes at the Met became known as ‘The Diamond Horseshoe’ as the radiance of the stunning diamond jewels of the patrons lit up under the gaslights and the massive chandelier. This diamond starburst brooch would have felt completely at home. Likely it would have been worn as only one of a collection of starburst brooches pinned to a fur or dress. A singular part of the Diamond Horseshoe.
This starburst is one of my personal favorites, it has a touch of a snowflake look to the design. The brooch is handcrafted in 18 karat gold with the diamonds set in silver. The center stone is an Old European Cushion cut diamond that weighs just over a half carat, and the total weight in diamonds, including the additional 56 Old European cut stones, is about 3.25 carats. This fantastic piece is exceptionally sparkly and lively, the diamonds flashing with your every move. The pin stem is a later replacement and is fixed, but the brooch has an enhancer fitting on the back so this piece would be easy to wear as a pendant. It has no hallmarks that I can see, I purchased it in England, and it was likely made there, around 1880-1890. It measures 34 mm north to south and across and weighs 12.9 grams. The star has been appraised by a GIA Master Gemologist and I’m happy to provide a full copy of the appraisal upon request, the insurance replacement value is $12,500 USD.
This stunning and versatile brooch or pendant is ready for it's re-introduction to the world. Maybe you'll take it to the Met? It promises to shine just as brightly under LED light as it did under the gaslights back in the day.

Halley’s Comet is named for famed astronomer Edmond Halley, but it’s sightings date to long before Halley was around. In fact, it’s sightings are recorded in ancient Greek history from as early as 486 BC. Imagine how brightly it must have shown in the Grecian night sky, long before light pollution, or even much in the way of lights! Halley predicted that it would pass over Georgian England on the 13th of March, 1759 and when his prediction came true, it ushered a new era of wonder into Victorian Europe.
This fantastic comet brooch is testimonial to that 19th century fascination for all things science and the natural world. Hand crafted in 9 karat gold, this fantastic brooch was made in England around 1870-80. The front depicts a shooting star set with three round turquoise gems in it’s tails and a creamy white pearl in the star itself, it is shooting through a pearl set witches heart. The brooch measures 18.6 mm north to south and 46.3 mm across, it is 7.3 mm deep. This wonderful, hand crafted brooch weighs 2.8 grams.

I don’t feel the need to flood my shop with cameos. I find them fascinating and very beautiful, but I feel like a stunning example or two is all I really need. I have a weakness for a lovely frame and very fine carving and an equal weakness for the motif of Night and Day. The image of these two goddesses brights me joy.
For she is Eos, goddess of the day, she is Aurora, she is Dawn; bringer of light of hope and rejuvenation. She wears roses in her hair and is the Mother of the winds and of the planets. She lifts her head to face the new coming of day and rides on the wings of an eagle.
And she is Nyx, she is the primordial goddess of the night, who emerged at the dawn of creation. She is the mother of Hypnos. She has her eyes closed in peaceful sleep and she wears poppies in her hair as the moon rises over her peaceful profile.
Hand crafted in about 1870, this beautiful Night and Day cameo brooch is set in an intricate 15 karat gold frame. This cameo measures 53.7 mm north to south and 44.2 mm across, it fastens with a C catch and is marked ’15 ct’. The brooch weighs 25.2 grams and has a safety chain.

The witches heart was a piece of jewelry that had a purpose. Originally it was used as a talisman to ward off evil spirits, especially during childbirth and nursing. This style of heart had become so popular in Scotland in the 17th century that it was sold from small stalls or locked booths and so is sometimes also called a 'Luckenbooth'. By the time that this double Witches heart was made in the early 19th century, the meaning had changed somewhat and these hearts were often given as tokens of love, to indicated that the wearer had ‘bewitched’ the giver!
This fabulous Georgian Witches heart brooch is set with a rectangular citrine gem in silver. It was hand crafted in England or possibly Scotland around 1820 and has a lively fiery glint and unusual Maltese cross at the top. The citrine is closed backed and has a small hanger at the top, it could be worn as a pendant. This stunning piece is on the larger side, measuring 70 mm north to south and 48.6 mm across, the citrine measures 7.5 x 9.3 mm. The brooch bears no marks but tests as sterling silver and weighs 16.7 grams.

In the North of Scotland lie the Highlands, and in the Highlands lie a mountain range named after the beauty of it’s blue hills. In Scottish, it is called Carin Gorm, or Caringorm. These hills are synonymous (literally) with a yellow or smoky quartz that has been mined here for hundreds of years. What we now commonly call Citrine has long been known in Scottish jewels as a ‘Caringorm’.
This brooch holds the perfect example of a Caringorm at its heart. The center stone is a whopping 69 carats of sparkling whiskey colored goodness, it measures 32.2x25.4x16 mm. The mounting of this stone is no less fabulous than it deserves, it is fully hand crafted in sterling silver with rich blue enamel accents. This mount is deep enough that the stone doesn’t pop out the back and so it would convert beautifully to a pendant (which we’d be happy to do upon request). This wonderful piece was made in Edinburgh, Scotland in about 1850, it is marked with the Queens head for sterling silver, the thistle and a makers mark “MC”. The brooch overall measures 36.4 mm north to south, 43.7 mm across and sits 19.9 mm high, it weighs 33.8 grams.
This brooch was without a doubt created to be worn on a plaid or sash, or as a kilt decoration, but it would do well on any sturdy fabric.

I lucked out with Luckenbooth's on my last trip to England. One of my very favorite vendors had just purchased an entire collection of them and I happened to be there just in time to swoop them all up. This one is the perfect sized to give as a token of affection to the one you love; show them you’re bewitched with this double witches heart brooch, the original engagement ring!
This fantastic brooch was most certainly hand crafted in the UK, in either England or Scotland, around 1860-70. the brooch measures 35.2 mm north to south and 25.7 mm across and weighs 6.2 grams. This unmarked beauty has been carefully acid tested and tests as sterling silver.

To the Victorians, an anchor was a symbol of hope and steadfastness. Husbands would go off to sea as wives stood waving goodbye in the salty air of the harbor; they wore anchor motifs as a sentiment that they would see each other again. They would trust this idea and would hold enduring love, despite distance and danger. The anchor was also mentioned in a beautiful bible verse, Hebrews 6:19, “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and secure, and which enters into that within the veil.” This was likely the origination of the symbol, but of course, an anchor is logically a resource for ensuring safety, for holding steady, and for sound reliance.
This fantastic Anchor brooch has the added Victorian sentiment of the ivy leaf, a symbol of love, used as ‘I cling to thee’. The sterling silver anchor has pink and yellow gold washed leaves and tips for added visual interest. This wonderful piece measures 43.5 mm north to south and 22.7 mm across at the widest point, it weighs 2.7 grams. We’d be happy to convert this lovely brooch to a pendant upon request. The pin is marked to the reverse with the hallmarks showing that it was made in Birmingham, England in 1890, it also has a makers mark.
Sail away with this fantastic sea-themed anchor jewel. No need to be by the water to wear it, anywhere with a glass of wine and a sunset will do.

When Queen Victoria's Royal Court followed her to Scotland and Barlmoral Castle, the demand for Scottish jewelry in all forms flourished. The witches heart, with a tail that almost always twists to the right, had become a popular and very romantic motif in Scotland in the 17th century. Made to ward off witches and evil spirits, it was sold from small stalls or locked booths and is sometimes also called a 'Luckenbooth'. By the time this wonderful brooch was made during the Victorian era, these brooches were being given as betrothal pieces, often shown with the hearts intertwined, the message was that the receiver had ‘bewitched’ the giver!
This wonderful brooch was hand crafted in about 1880, it is beautifully detailed with blue, white, red and green enamel to the front. This piece is unmarked but tests as sterling silver. It was likely made in England. The brooch measures 40.3 mm north to south and 29.9 mm across and weighs 9.8 grams.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June of 1914 was the trigger that launched the Great War of 1914-1918, which we now call World War I. The English tried to stay out of the war, but on August 4th the Germans came through Belgium and attacked France and England could no longer ignore the treat, within days they were officially at war. English patriotism was high during war time and this ‘Bully’ bulldog holding a Union Jack in his mouth was just one symbol of this national feeling.
This wonderful brooch was hand crafted in sterling silver in 1914. It is beautifully rendered with great attention to detail, the bright enameled colors of the British flag really pop! This wonderful piece is marked to the reverse with the word ‘silver’ and a Registration number, ‘REGd 644039’, indicating the date of origin. The doggie measures 21.4 mm north to south and 35.2 mm across and weighs 3.8 grams.

This fabulous Victorian double Witches heart brooch is beautifully enameled with rich matte light blue and white forget-me-not flowers making up each heart. It was hand crafted, most likely in England, in about 1860-70. This brooch does show some signs of having an old repair to the C catch, please look carefully at the photos to see this, it’s quite stable and I wouldn’t touch it as is it’s really unnecessary. This brooch measures 30.8 mm top to bottom and 28.7 mm across, it weighs 4.5 grams. This unmarked brooch acid tests as 15 karat gold. This wonderful brooch can also easily be worn as a pendant.
I love a good witches heart brooch, but I was over the moon to find this unusual enameled one with such a sweet sentimentality to it!

This fluttery Butterfly is so full of color and life that I almost want to follow it along to see where it will land. Perhaps on a flower? Perhaps on your coat? Take it along and see for yourself.
The English firm of John Atkins and Sons was well known for their beautiful enamel work and they were especially known for fabulous butterflies like this one. This lovely lady is enamel over sterling silver and has a wonderful play of color. It’s a larger one, measuring 45 mm north to south and 64.8 mm across. It weighs 19 grams and is marked to the reverse with ‘Sterling Silver’ and the makers mark ‘JA & S’. Made in England around 1915-1920.

In Scotland, the thistle is the national symbol, it stands for pain, protection, and pride. There is a legend that is based in the 13th century in which the Norse King’s soldiers invade a Scottish Coastal town. This Viking King plotted to sneak slyly in on the Scottish Clansmen and Highlanders, while they slept. They chose to go barefoot. One of the soldiers stepped on a native thistle and cried out in pain. His scream was so loud it woke the Scots and thus the battle began prematurely, leaving the Scots victorious. How factual this myth is, is up to interpretation; but around this time period, the thistle became a symbol of national pride in Scotland.
This wonderful Scottish brooch is set with an array of richly colored agates in shades of reds, yellows, oranges and grays which form a traditional Garter motif. The center of the brooch features a detailed silver thistle with one Amethyst and two Citrine faceted thistle flowers. This early example of Scottish jewelry was probably made around 1850-1860 and it has a small clip at the top, probably meant to hold a safety chain originally, it can now be used to hang this large brooch on a sturdy chain. The back of this piece is engraved with the initials EW in curvy script. There is a small repair to the back where a new ‘C’ clasp was put on. The brooch measures 60.3 mm north to south and 51 mm across and it weighs 31.4 grams. There are no hallmarks and we’ve tested it as sterling silver.
When the Castle at Balmoral was completed in 1856, the entourage of the Royal family flocked to Scotland. They dressed themselves in tartans and plaids, pinned with brooches set with agates, amethysts and citrines, brooches like this magnificent beauty.

She remembers when she first fell in love. It was as though something pierced her heart, and she placed her hand to her chest. Her stomach fluttered and her cheeks were touched with pink. He was a boy in her class that helped carry her books. His eyes were dark, like chocolate truffles. He had four freckles on his nose. His hair was sandy, windblown, and wavy. He walked her home every day that year, telling her jokes just to make her smile. She was 11 and he was 12. He was the boy next door. 10 years later he was the boy with the ring on his finger, making her coffee in the morning, still telling jokes because her smile made his heart skip a beat, and his stomach flutter, and his cheeks turn pink. This piece reminds her of that feeling, as if Cupid’s Arrow struck her heart.
This sterling silver arrow brooch was handcrafted in Scotland around 1880. It is a striking piece that measures 70.3 x 25.8 mm and weighs 8.3 grams. The back contains a c-clasp to fit snugly on your favorite top! Red and gray granite decorate this arrow and shield brooch. It has been acid tested.
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were enthralled with Scotland since they first began to visit during the 1840s. In 1852, the couple purchased Balmoral Castle to reside in during summers. Queen Victoria owned the estate until her death in 1901. During that time, the demand for Scottish jewelry was high. Between the colorful pebble design made with native Scottish stones and the use of silver, this piece was very clearly made during this era of heavy Scottish inspiration. It was a time where traditional Scottish jewelry mixed with Victorian styles, inspiring themes such as Celtic knots, swords, kilts, thistles, plaid pins, and flowers.
This piece reminds me of Cupid’s arrow, helping jewelry loving souls find their next brooch!

The amber glow from the sun at dusk was fading as he looked at her. They were on his back porch drinking tea and lemonade, doing nothing in particular. His eyes traveled from her messy ponytail to her neck, to her collar, where he saw something metallic and interesting. It was a brooch she had affixed to her lapel. He wanted to ask her about it, but the silence was so pleasant he didn’t dare, at least not yet. She shivered as a breeze rushed by and he wrapped his warm arm around her, as a true gentleman does. As the last of the day’s light sank into the earth, the sky turned black and the stars popped out.

It fluttered in the wind like a snowflake in December. It danced through the sky like a ballerina on a stage. The butterfly landed on her nose, only for a moment, enough time for her to smile and feel it tickle her cheeks with its wings. She saw the turquoise and the indigo as it shimmered in the springtime sun. She chased it, desperate to watch it be violet, cyan, and azure all at the same time again. It seemed so dramatic and yet so gentle.

I was in northern Scotland, browsing the Dornock Bookshop, when I decided that six more books were enough and it was time to go. I wandered the streets, admiring the old brown stone buildings the locals think of as home. Daisy Chain Café was welcoming and warm, and the barista mentioned a few shops I might enjoy on my impulsive adventure into the Highlands. The weather was calm, warm, blue, and green, about 60 degrees with a breeze that frizzled my hair. I found a few antique shops filled with old lamps, a table I desperately wanted, and a few tchotchkes that would have looked fabulous on my mantle back home. Of course, among this fascinating bedlam of goodies, I found this. And now, so have you.

The heart is a symbol engrained in our society to mean friendship, love, and support. It’s an ancient symbol that stems from the shape of ivy and fig leaves, which traditionally represented fidelity. It was the Middle Ages that saw the heart motif begin to signify love, and, as it always does, fashion followed suit. The Victorians believed that two hearts, side by side, represented two people as bound together, typically bestowed as a betrothal gift.
This charming Victorian brooch was handcrafted around 1880 in England. It showcases two yellow-green heart shaped cabochon chrysoberyls surrounded by 44 creamy white pearls and topped with a bow, set in 18 karat gold. Each chrysoberyl measures 13 x 11 x 5 mm. Overall, this brooch pin measures 27.3 x 30 mm and it weighs 8.0 grams. The maker’s mark reads, “A&W” and it bears the gold purity hallmark, “18”.

This antique silver bird brooch was handcrafted in 1917 in Europe. Across the open-winged bird is a banner that reads, “Ypres”, a city in Belgium known for the Battle of Ypres – a series of fights during World War I between Germany and the Allied Forces. This brooch measures 60 mm across and 17.3 mm north to south. It has been acid tested and weighs 2.7 grams.
There were hundreds of thousands of casualties in the five engagements of the Battle of Ypres, which began in 1914 and ended in 1918. It was a significant battleground, and remembering it meant commemorating a plethora of multi-nationals that were involved – including but not limited to Australians, Belgians, Canadians, Indians, Africans, and New Zealanders. There were controversial moves in the battles that have gone down in history as potentially improper, which is saying a lot as far as warfare goes. Of course, out of tragedy, there is always a silver lining. Subsequently, the town and surrounding areas were completely rebuilt and brought into the modern era with new technologies and architecture.
What better way to remember something so life altering than a badge of honor?

Here is a wonderful and cheeky rooster who is beautifully hand crafted. The body of the bird is created from a large, natural, Baroque Pearl. His tail is set with a spray of rubies, diamonds and sapphires; and his head is further set with rubies, sapphires and emeralds. The brooch is fully engraved with fanciful and realistic details down to the toes on its perfect little feet.
This piece is marked on the back of the leg, but I was not able to make these marks out. It was most likely made in France in the 1940s, at a time when these brooches were highly desirable and created by many of the important jewelry houses. Buccellati, Cartier, Yard and Tiffany all crafted brooches in this genre, many with a pearl as the central body of the animal. It's quite possible this brooch was created by one of these important houses. It's beautifully crafted, note how the back is left open to reveal the back of this magnificent, 60 carat natural pearl.
The body of this piece tests as 18 karat gold and the diamonds are set in platinum. The pin stem has a trombone style clasp. The brooch measures 55 x 53x 17 mm and weighs 21.56 grams.

She wore this brooch much like a man wears a watch. With confidence and a touch of charm. She was debonair in her gaze as she ordered a coffee, black, and patiently waited. She munched on a croissant drizzled in honey as she walked around the city, in her high heels and dark red lipstick, perfectly aware of how sleek a touch of black and gold can look.

The Arts and Crafts movement in England began as a response to the Industrial Revolution and the mechanization of the decorative arts. It bloomed into one of the most enduring legacies of style to come out of the 19th and 20th centuries. Something about the return to hand crafting and the motifs of the natural world speaks to the very root of human nature.
This wonderful brooch was handcrafted in London around 1900-10, and was most likely done by Henry George Murphy. Anchored by a beautiful large opal gem, this brooch is framed in 15 karat gold with a scroll and foliate design. This rectangular brooch holds a large cabochon precious opal which measures 30 x 20 x 7 mm and weighs approximately 23 carats. Precious opals are known for their diffraction of light, called ‘play of color’, in which rainbow colors shine from inside the stone like a kaleidoscope of firelight. Overall, this piece measures 39.7 x 27.6 mm and it weighs 60.8 grams. It has been acid tested. This brooch comes in an antique box which reads, “Gieves 27 Old Bond Street London, W.I.”, most likely it’s not original to the brooch but it has kept it in good order over the years.
Henry George Murphy was part of the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London and later went on to become a silversmith of some renown, working mostly in the Art Deco style.
For all occasions and even non-occasions. This brooch is sheer perfection, it gives off color no matter where you are.

It was a hidden treasure, a diamond in the rough, a needle in a haystack, if you will. It was the end of my trip and although I’d had a fabulous time, I was still looking for my own crown jewels. Instinct guided me into a tiny shop with dark fabric draping from the ceiling and tables of tchotchkes and shelves of curios. In London, one can learn a lot from a shopkeeper if you seem uninterested for long enough. There was a door in the back, she pointed it out to me. I feigned boredom as I opened it. And there she was, this beauty, this fortune.

The amethyst measures 13.5 x 11.7 x 6.4 mm and weighs approximately 4.82 carats. It bears the silver fineness mark, “950” and the maker’s mark, “MB CO”.

This stunning brooch was made by the firm of Murrle Bennett and Company, an Anglo-German firm started by Ernst Murrle and J.B. Bennett, which produced pieces for retail by the store 'Liberty and Co.', the famous (and my personal favorite) London Arts and Crafts dealers. It’s the type of jewelry I can’t get enough of. There’s something so elegant and timeless about the stylized foliate forms, the usage of semi-precious stones, and the abstract motifs clearly influenced by nature. I can see myself now, with this brooch at the center of a white button-up blouse, faded jeans and pair of booties, just in time for fall.
This lovely Murrle and Bennett Company gold brooch was handcrafted in England around 1910. It’s an Art Nouveau pin with a turquoise at the center with a natural pearl drop set in 15 karat gold. It measures 30 x 26 mm and weighs 4.9 grams. It bears the gold purity mark, “15CT” and the maker’s mark, “MBCO”.
The company was in existence from 1886-1914. After World War I, the company was renamed White Redgrove & White. Murrle Bennett and Company jewelry is now highly sought-after and widely collected.

Symbolism was powerful to the Victorians. With strict rules of society and culture they had to express themselves in non-verbal ways, like through art, music and literature. When it came to jewelry, symbolism and creativity were combined. This faith, hope, and charity brooch was a popular motif during the Victorian era. We have the cross, a traditional symbol indicative of faith, the heart, a symbol reaching back thousands of years, which is representative of charity and last but not least, there’s the anchor; long associated with sailors at sea, it indicates hope and steadfastness. A sailor hopes to land an anchor in a safe place after a long journey.
This silver gilt brooch was handcrafted in Birmingham, England in 1900. It’s a late Victorian brooch that features the traditional cross, heart, and anchor motif set on a crescent. It also spells out the words, “Faith Hope Charity”. This antique pin measures 41.5 x 21 mm and weighs 2.8 grams. It bears the assay mark for Birmingham, the lion mark for sterling, the date letter, “a” for 1900, and the maker’s mark, “P&T”.
A faith, hope, and charity accessory was typically gifted by sweethearts, from mothers to children, or between sisters.

Kate Greenaway was a beloved children's writer and illustrator and a rival of Randolph Caldecott. Her first book was, 'Under the Window', a best-selling collection of stories about the idyllic lives of children. Her wonderful characters were used widely in Victorian times to decorate porcelain, clothes, and all manner of items, including jewelry. She would portray her characters in early 19th century clothing, which in turn influenced the Victorian fashion of the times. Liberty of London adapted her drawings as designs for actual children’s clothing! This sweet brooch is a stunning example of how her illustrations shaped fashion.
This Kate Greenaway brooch was handcrafted in Victorian England around 1890. It is crafted in 18 karat gold and features the motif of a boy whispering into a girl’s ear. A fence makes up the background while a cute cat and a woven basket sit near the couple’s feet. This brooch pin is decorated with two pearls and two rose cut diamonds. This piece measures 32.5 x 24 mm and it weighs 8.1 grams. It bears the gold purity mark, “18” and the maker’s mark, “AF”.
I always found Kate Greenaway to be a role model. Her career is aspirational as her work affected both the literary community and the fashion industry. She was a woman making strides well over a hundred years ago and her books are still coveted today. This brooch is a token of her successes and her brilliant imagination.

Hunting, in the 1870’s, wasn’t just a man’s game. Women were invited to attend, and they most certainly knew how to dress for the occasion. An adventurous lady of means would ride sidesaddle on her horse, while wearing red to prevent any shots from coming her way. This woman would have known that thematic accessories were also required, such as a hunting-inspired brooch to accent her black riding hat.
This awesome antique Victorian citrine silver brooch was handcrafted around 1870 in the Scottish style. It features a quadruple deer head motif with the antlers holding the oval faceted citrine in place. This stone measures 27.4 x 19.3 x 10.5 mm and weighs approximately 29.43 carats. The large brooch weighs 41.7 grams and measures 69.5 x 63 x 21.5 grams. There are no marks on this fabulous piece, and it has been acid tested.

I’m always ravenous for pieces of art that can be worn and shown off. And pieces like these, with endless charm and flattery, are by far my favorite. There’s a sweetness with this piece that stems from the jeweler’s love for his craft. There’s tradition with this piece, illuminated from the idea of nature. There’s a fashion with this piece, found in the ratios of gold, crystal, and paint, which give a sense of perfect artistic balance.
This antique Victorian gold Essex crystal brooch was handcrafted in England around 1880. It features a detailed motif of a horse and bridle, set in 15 karat gold. It’s a round pin that measures 22.4 mm in diameter and weighs 8.4 grams. It bears the hallmark, “V” and a maker’s mark. This brooch has been acid tested.
This type of reverse cut and painted rock crystal is commonly called an Essex Crystal. It’s made by taking a smooth round rock crystal, and cabochon cutting it, then deeply reverse-carving it. The stone is then hand-painted from the back. It’s a tedious process that takes many man hours. Of course, every minute of work on this piece was absolutely worth it!

When I was a kid, I would beg and plead for my parents to take me to the movie theatre; some would say I was obsessed. I used to turn around and look at the projector, I’d gaze at the little speck of bright light that glowed like the moon against the dark. It looked like a sparkling diamond, full of time and full of history. This brooch reminds me of that speck of light, a moon with diamonds that radiates, even in twilight.
This antique diamond and pearl crescent moon brooch sparkles with light. It was handcrafted in France around 1880. It’s decorated with six Old European cut diamonds patterned among nine pearls, set in silver over 18 karat gold. Each of the larger pearls measure 3.5 mm in diameter. The diamonds weigh approximately 1.32 total carats. This beautiful pin measures 32.4 x 34 mm and it weighs 9.5 grams. It bears French marks on the pin stem and has been acid tested.
Let this crescent moon brooch light up your lapel with its glittery diamonds and shiny white pearls.

Racket sports date back centuries but tennis began in England on the lawns of well-to-do ladies’. Middle-class Victorian ladies held highly regulated lives during the mid-1800s. They weren’t allowed to pick flowers in parks or to attend public meetings. They were, however, allowed a few leisure activities and one of the most popular was tennis. It began as a casual sport, with patting a ball back and forth on a well-tended lawn. Once the men got involved, the game became more competitive with score-keeping. Official rules for tennis were finalized in 1874. Tennis was a game of mental and physical strength, but it was also considered a moral and exciting sport for the Victorians.
This antique Victorian niello tennis racket brooch was handcrafted around 1880. It measures 51.4 x 18.6 x 6.5 mm and weighs 3.2 grams. It’s a charming pin with a tennis ball in the center of the racket head. It bears the silver fineness mark, “800”.
Beat the competition with this charming racket brooch pinned to your collar!
