Like clouds on fire at sunset, like volatile ancient galaxies, opals like this just capture your gaze and refuse to let go. Ancient stories tell of the God of Storms who became so jealous of the God of Rainbows that he broke him all to pieces and where those fractured rainbows landed they became opals. It's easy to see why one might believe such tales, for opals such as this defy logic, their fantastical glowing auroras seem other worldly, a painted universe encapsulated.
I admit it, Art Nouveau rings like this one just make my heart go pitter patter, the French made such beautiful Nouveau pieces. This Nouveau mounting resembles a decorative gold frame. This fantastic ring is set with a lovely cabochon of opal which contains all colors of the rainbow and has a lively play of color. The ring measures 24.2 mm north to south and 16.6 mm across, it sits 4.3 mm off the finger and narrows to 1.9 mm at the back of the band. It is marked with French hallmarks and tests as 18 karat gold. Made in France in about 1900, this wonderful ring is a size 6.25 but could be re-sized somewhat to suit. It weighs 5.8 grams.
