They sat outside a café in a city in the summertime. The sky was blue and humid with cotton clouds and twittering birds. They had iced coffees and a newspaper between the two of them. He cracked a joke and she looked up at him laughing and squinting her blue eyes in the sunlight. He smiled and pulled a ring out of his pocket. She was stunned. He said, “Happy Birthday”. She fell speechless for a moment, sliding gold and turquoise onto her finger. It matched the sky and filled her heart with love.
This lovely antique Victorian turquoise gold knot ring was handcrafted in England around 1890. There are 12 round cabochon turquoise stones that create two forget-me-not flowers on either side of the center knot. A gold heart hangs from the knot, symbolizing everlasting love. The ring face with the drop measures 16 x 12 x 3.4 mm off the finger. The band width is 2.4 mm at the back. This ring is a size 6.75 and it weighs 3.4 grams. It bears no marks and has been acid tested at 15 karat gold. I believe that the dangling heart was a later addition to this wonderful love knot and forget-me-not flower ring.
Lover’s knot rings are a romantic motif of everlasting love and fidelity. They date back to ancient times to Egyptian carvings and Celtic artwork.

One with salsa music and sling back heels that spun to the melody dancing in the air. it was a night of bad jokes, paired with equal amounts of laughter and mixed with the perfect amount of aged tequila. It worked because of sparks and chemistry and attraction. Of course, the gift of a gold bracelet didn’t hurt.

This is the kind of bracelet that holds its own as a single just fine, but plays oh, so nicely with others. Wear one, wear three, or go nuts and stack up as many as you can fit, they make a wonderful musical sound when paired up and people will hear you coming and smile.
This antique 15 karat yellow gold curb link bracelet was hand crafted in England around 1900. It was made by a master craftsman who would roll the gold and then hand form each link by wrapping the gold around pitch, then it would be slightly heated to let the pitch run out. The result is a bracelet that is light and airy while looking large and chunky. The Victorians didn’t have the same easy access to gold that we have now, so they had to make due with what they could find and they created the most beautiful hollow jewelry. This wonderful piece is 7.5 inches long and closes with a heart shaped padlock which has a safety chain for added security. The links of the bracelet measure 12 x 10 x 5 mm and the lock is 23.6 x 16.5 x 3.6 mm, it weighs 22.2 grams. Each link is marked with ’15’ for the gold content, as is the lock.

The term ‘bewitched’ dates to the 1200s, but it wasn’t until some 300 years later that the meaning changed from a fearful term with an implication of harm to the more figurative sense of charming someone, enchanting them with delightful attraction. The Victorians, with their love of all things figural, created wonderful witches heart jewelry, usually in the form of brooches and sometimes pendants, but this is the first time I’ve ever stumbled upon a witches heart ring, and I have to say that this one bewitched me instantly.
Hand crafted in 18 karat gold, this English beauty was made around 1880. It is set with a lovely Old European cut center diamond which weighs about .4 carats, surrounded by an additional 9 old cut diamonds which add up to about a further .92 carats, for a total approximate diamond weight of 1.32 carats. The center stone has a distinctly golden hue, while the surrounding stones are well matched and very white, all of the stones are very sparkly, clean, and beautifully hand cut. The ring measures 12 mm north to south and 10.3 mm across, it sits 8 mm off the finger and narrows to 4 mm at the back of the band. This ring is marked ’18’ for the gold content and bears the makers mark of ‘E.C.’, it is a size 8.25 and weighs 4.7 grams.
Have you been bewitched? This fantastic and unusual ring would make an absolutely stunning and unique engagement ring!

She barely felt it when he slipped it on her finger. She was too mesmerized by his eyes, their bright blue hue sparkled with mischief as his finger drew circles on the inside of her palm. They were at the theatre, but neither of them had their eyes on the stage, they were preoccupied by each other, finally alone in the dark, able to touch for the first time. ‘I love you’, he mouthed it, and held her hand up as his eyes drifted to the ring newly alighted on her finger. She felt it now and looked down in surprise. The heart shone in the lights from the stage, it was the same color as his eyes.

When Queen Victoria's Royal Court followed her to Scotland and Barlmoral Castle, the demand for Scottish jewelry in all forms flourished. The witches heart, with a tail that almost always twists to the right, had become a popular and very romantic motif in Scotland in the 17th century. Made to ward off witches and evil spirits, it was sold from small stalls or locked booths and is sometimes also called a 'Luckenbooth'. By the time this wonderful brooch was made during the Victorian era, these brooches were being given as betrothal pieces, often shown with the hearts intertwined, the message was that the receiver had ‘bewitched’ the giver!
This wonderful brooch was hand crafted in about 1880, it is beautifully detailed with blue, white, red and green enamel to the front. This piece is unmarked but tests as sterling silver. It was likely made in England. The brooch measures 40.3 mm north to south and 29.9 mm across and weighs 9.8 grams.

The witches heart, with a tail that almost always twists to the right, was a piece of jewelry that had a purpose. Originally it was used as a talisman to ward off evil spirits, especially during childbirth and nursing. This style of heart had become so popular in Scotland in the 17th century that it was sold from small stalls or locked booths and so is sometimes also called a 'Luckenbooth'. By the time that this double Witches heart was made in the 19th century, the meaning had changed somewhat and these double hearts were often given as tokens of love, to indicated that the wearer had ‘bewitched’ the giver!
This fabulous Victorian double Witches heart brooch is beautifully enameled with rich matte light blue and white forget-me-not flowers making up each heart. It was hand crafted, most likely in England, in about 1860-70. This brooch does show some signs of having an old repair to the C catch, please look carefully at the photos to see this, it’s quite stable and I wouldn’t touch it as is it’s really unnecessary. This brooch measures 30.8 mm top to bottom and 28.7 mm across, it weighs 4.5 grams. This unmarked brooch acid tests as 15 karat gold. This wonderful brooch can also easily be worn as a pendant.
I love a good witches heart brooch, but I was over the moon to find this unusual enameled one with such a sweet sentimentality to it!

The amber glow from the sun at dusk was fading as he looked at her. They were on his back porch drinking tea and lemonade, doing nothing in particular. His eyes traveled from her messy ponytail to her neck, to her collar, where he saw something metallic and interesting. It was a brooch she had affixed to her lapel. He wanted to ask her about it, but the silence was so pleasant he didn’t dare, at least not yet. She shivered as a breeze rushed by and he wrapped his warm arm around her, as a true gentleman does. As the last of the day’s light sank into the earth, the sky turned black and the stars popped out.

The heart is a symbol engrained in our society to mean friendship, love, and support. It’s an ancient symbol that stems from the shape of ivy and fig leaves, which traditionally represented fidelity. It was the Middle Ages that saw the heart motif begin to signify love, and, as it always does, fashion followed suit. The Victorians believed that two hearts, side by side, represented two people as bound together, typically bestowed as a betrothal gift.

Pebble jewelry, like this bracelet, had been made in Scotland for hundreds of years before Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought a castle at Balmoral and made them a trend. They were a beautiful way to express one’s sense of self. With the help of railways in the British Isles, tourism grew and many visited the Highlands for its beauty and its connection with the Queen. Travelers made their way to Scotland and they brought back pebble jewelry, made with distinctive native stones, like agate, and decorated with engraved designs, just like the flowers on this gorgeous bracelet.

It showcases an array of orange, brown and peach colored agate stones carved into beautiful flowers, like a bouquet for the wrist, held together with a sentimental silver heart lock set with a burnt orange agate. I remember exactly where I was when I found this one. It was early, as most shopping days are, at the fairgrounds of the gigantic Newark Antiques fair north of London. I came prepared, with a mug of black coffee and a lemon slice from the Café nearby. It was spring, so a jacket was required, I donned my long black trench, feeling very Sherlock Holmes, on a mission. My mission ended abruptly as I was distracted by a stall laden with Victorian goodies, including this very necklace.
This antique Victorian necklace was handcrafted around 1890 in England. It features a double heart motif tied together with a bow, with two doves holding a flower. I was strolling through the narrow cobblestoned streets just north of Paris, in a small town not used to strangers. I found a sandwich shop and in my best broken French ordered ‘un sandwich avec jambon et fromage’ and a glass of Rosé. The man I ordered from was kind, he moved slowly, enjoying the summer’s heat. The small patio overlooked a valley of clay roofed houses and intertwining streets. I found a table and sat. As I held onto the stem of the clear glass, my bracelet caught the sun’s light, making it glow like a cave of wonders. I sipped the wine, tasting the notes of strawberry and basil, letting the flavors linger on my tongue. I noticed how my wrist looked like the sun itself, giving life to earth, making the heavens envious. I also noticed the view and the toughness of my baguette sandwich, and how the wine gave tastes to the bread that could only be found here, right here, in this place, in this moment.

A billowy scarf, a dress with an impossible neckline, a jaunty hat, a silk neck tie; these are just a few of the things that would be greatly improved upon by adding a pin as fabulous as this one.
Hand crafted by one of my favorite firms, Murrle Bennett & Co., this wonderful pin features a lovely heart shaped opal at the top and a smaller round opal at the termination of what looks like a stylized G-clef. The pin is made in 9 karat gold with a rosy pink color, it is 47.5 mm from top to bottom and 12mm across at the widest point. Made in England around 1900-1910. This pin is marked ‘9ct’, ‘Patent’ and with the ‘MB&Co’ makers mark, it weighs 2.2 grams.
This versatile pin would make a great gift for the one that you love!

How could he have known? She didn’t say anything. Yet, somehow, the pendant she had been secretly lusting over online for months was in the velvet black box he just gave to her. She looked at him, stunned, happy, and surprised in the best way. He smiled at her, with a look of slyness and charm. He walked around her, helping her put it around her neck, slightly touching her skin with his fingertips. It looked perfect there, his heart, hanging right next to hers.
This vintage Mid Century puffy heart pendant was handcrafted by the skilled Bernard Hertz around 1950. It’s a silver heart with a leaf motif on the front. It measures 54.5 x 35 x 12 mm and weighs 10.1 grams. It bears the silver fineness mark, “830S” and the maker’s mark for Bernard Hertz, “BH”.
This large heart pendant would look absolutely lovely dangling from your favorite silver chain.

This sentimental beauty was made in England around 1900-1910, it is 4.6 mm wide and is a size 5.5. It weighs 3.1 grams. This ring is not marked, but has been carefully acid tested to verify gold content.

The Luckenbooth gets it’s name from the locked booths that sold these iconic brooches along the Royal Mile near St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland. These brooches were part of the crown and heart motif which also birthed the claddagh ring design. They were usually given as a love token or a betrothal gift, the two hearts intertwining symbolized a lasting union. I was thrilled when I came across this very large and handsome example on my last trip to London, and was even more happier when I saw the early hallmark, dating this wonderful piece to the early years of the Victorian era.
This large antique silver Luckenbooth brooch was handcrafted in Birmingham, England in 1846. It bears an engraved scrolling design overtop two overlapping hearts topped with a crown. This brooch pin measures 71.5 mm top to bottom and 50 mm across at the widest point, it weighs 24.3 grams. It is fully hallmarked and bears the duty mark of Queen Victoria looking left, the lion passant, the date letter, “X”, the anchor for Birmingham, and the maker’s mark, “CW.Co” for Cronin & Wheeler.
This enduring silver token of romance would make an excellent gift for the one you want to love forever.

The idea of the heart shape being linked to the concept of love developed in the 15th century. The shape itself dates back further and has been identified in paintings, texts, and other media. However, it probably wasn’t the heart that these artists were conceptualizing. This shape stemmed from the shape of fig leaves, pears, and ivy leaves, which were traditionally associated with fidelity.
This vintage American gold and diamond ring was handcrafted around 1960. It was made in 14 karat gold and is in the shape of a heart. Half of the heart is smothered in 34 round faceted diamonds that weigh approximately .55 carats altogether. The other half of the heart is polished gold. This romantic ring is a size 6 and it weighs a hefty 10.6 grams. The ring face measures 23 x 17.5 x 9 mm and the band width is 3 mm at the back. It has been acid tested.
This fabulous heart ring is the funky sparkly accessory with a retro twist you’ve been waiting for!

Mourning jewelry has existed for centuries, it saw a rise in popularity during the 1800s, especially after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s beloved husband, passed in 1861. Mass production of these customized pieces took hold and even the working class had an opportunity to purchase a memorial token.
Mourning jewelry emerged long before photography existed, as a way to commemorate a loved one. To the Victorians, trumpets signified the day of judgement. They were interpreted as victory, as celebration. When surrounded by black enamel and topped with a pearl, it typically meant that the wearer was mourning the loss of a child. They were celebrating a life well-lived and years of shared love. I wouldn’t doubt, that at one time, there was a photograph or portrait miniature of the deceased inside this locket.
This antique Victorian black enameled and gold heart locket was handcrafted around 1870 in England. The front features a golden trumpet, surrounded by an array of golden flowers. A 2 mm diameter pearl decorates the instrument. When opened, two frames are revealed, they’re lined in pretty pink fabric and ready to hold your favorite photographs! This piece measures 39 x 29 x 10.5 mm and weighs 10.7 grams. It has been acid tested as 15k gold.
This beautiful locket isn’t strictly for remembering lost loves, but for holding pictures of current ones! Such as your significant other, or your dog!

Memento Mori is Latin for, ‘Remember that you have to die’. I swear it’s not as morbid as it sounds. It’s different from traditional mourning jewelry in the sense that it’s not mourning at all. It’s accepting the idea that death will come. It allows the wearer to be reminded of his or her own mortality and the afterlife.
Memento Mori jewelry was most popular during the 1600s and the first half of the 1700s. By the mid-1700s the trend began to die off (pun intended).
This Georgian heart shaped Memento Mori pendant was handcrafted in England, around 1730. It holds 38 faceted paste stones that border a motif, set behind clear crystal. Behind the glass is a gold foil wheat sheaf, symbolizing everlasting life. The wheat sheaf is in front of a woven lock of hair, typical in Memento Mori jewelry. This piece weighs 1.8 grams and measures 28 x 13 x 5 mm.
The wheat sheaf symbol is based in Christianity from when Jesus Christ broke bread and gave it to his disciples during the Last Supper. In terms of Memento Mori pieces, it can also be considered part of the divine harvest which would eventually be reaped. This expresses the ending of life and the resurrection of the soul.
This type of jewelry was not meant for grief or lamentation. Simply, it acknowledged that death was inevitable. I love finding early pieces like these. It clearly meant a lot to the wearer as it’s swimming in symbolism and culture.

Named for their resemblance to the gates at Buckingham Palace in London, bracelets like this one became very popular in the late Victorian era. Gate bracelets were made in many different styles, from simple to intricate, sometimes even set with stones. This one caught my eye because of the wonderful wide width of it and also because of the intricate engraving that gives it extra depth and beauty.
Completely hand crafted around 1900 in England, this gate bracelet was made with an eye to exquisite detail. It can be worn with either side up, the engraved side or the smooth one. The bracelet is 7.5 inches long and closes securely with the heart lock clasp. The clasp may not be original to this bracelet, I don’t think it is, but it’s lovely and matches up well; it’s engraved with a leaf pattern on the front and marked with ‘9ct’, ‘GOLD’ and a makers mark ‘W.J.S.’ on the reverse. This bracelet has a silky soft feel and a lovely weight, it weighs 29.3 grams. The links are marked ‘9ct’ as well, for 9 karat gold. The bracelet is 28 mm wide. There are extra links on both the lock and bracelet for a safety chain if one is desired.
Gate bracelets like this one are so imminently wearable, once you put this one on, you might never take it off!

We don’t think so much anymore of life being so tenuous, we’ve gotten used to a degree of stability. It wasn’t that long ago, though, that the World was on a knifes edge, poised on the brink of World War II, a war such as humanity had never known. In England, they dug up parks to fill sandbags, carried gas masks everywhere they went and sent their young men, and more than a few women, off to war. Remember me. Don’t forget me. Wait for me. These were sentiments felt by all. This marvelous bangle was made in this year, a gift from a sweetheart imbued with such bittersweet desire.
Hand crafted in Birmingham, England in 1939, at a time when not much jewelry was being made, this bangle has the bones of it’s Victorian forebears in its make, but is decorated with an enamel insignia and hand crafted rope motif. The blue and red enameled top is the cap badge of the corp, a staff and snake in a wreath topped with a crown; beneath this it reads “Royal Army Medical Corps”. The bangle is in wonderful condition without notable damage, it opens easily and closes with a satisfying little snap. It’s fully hallmarked inside with the marks for sterling silver, Birmingham and 1939 and also the makers mark ‘K.Ltd’, it is also stamped ‘Made in England’. The bangle is 20.4 mm wide and would fit comfortably on a wrist of 7.25 inches or less, it weighs 39.3 grams.
I couldn’t resist purchasing this sweet and historied bangle, it’s a beautiful and very unusual example of WWII Sweetheart jewelry!

There’s something to be said about a woman’s intuition - that it’s always right. Mine gets me up in the wee hours, cracking my eyes open long before dawn kisses the horizon. Gets me out to stand in line at gates that open for a select few at 5:30 a.m., sends me to just the right dealer first, allows me to find beautiful treasures like this one.
This rose gold hollow curb link bracelet with a heart clasp was hand crafted by J.H&S, in England, around 1900. It’s marked on the lock clasp with the maker’s mark that simply reads, ‘J.H&S’ and with the ‘9ct’ mark, meaning 9 karat rose gold. This piece weighs 26.4 grams and is just less than 8 inches in length. The links are 11.6 mm across and 6.5 mm in thickness. The heart clasp measures 25.1 x 19 x 3.9 mm. The wonderful open links of this gorgeous bracelet would be the perfect foundation for a collection, of fobs, of charms, of any little bits you like to collect!
From the moment this bracelet became mine I really considered keeping it all to myself. But alas, I truly am one for sharing!

One of the things that I like best about things made 100 plus years ago, is that they didn’t have access to plastic packaging or even easy access to mass produced glass. This meant that if you were buying face cream or perfume or a pot of rouge, you needed something to house it in, and more often than not, this something was beautiful and eminently reuseable. Such is the case with this beautiful heart-shaped perfume bottle.
Handcrafted in sterling silver, this perfume bottle probably originally hung from a chatelaine, but now could easily be enjoyed as a fantastic pendant. The bottle has a fully functioning screw top and when you unscrew it a whiff of scent still ventures out. It measures 59.2 mm long, 41.6 mm across and is 9.4 mm deep. The bottle is hallmarked with marks which show that it was handcrafted in Birmingham, England, in 1903 by Heath & Middleton. It weighs 21.9 grams.

Has someone stolen your heart? Here's the most perfect way to let them know! A locket that's just ready to hold a photo, a lock of hair or a small memento of your love.
This lovely handmade 15 karat gold locket has a wonderful hidden hinge and is decorated on the front with a blooming flower (perhaps a forget-me-not?). The flower is set with a bright round faceted emerald that measures 2.5 mm across and 14 natural pearls that range in size from 1.5 mm to .6 mm. The locket itself measures 7/8 of an inch across (20 mm) and is 1 1/4 inches long including the bale. The bale on this one seems to be a replacement as it is 9k whereas the rest of the locket is 15k. The hallmarks are very difficult to make out, one is a maker's mark that reads 'EF'. The locket weighs 4.3 grams.
