The sky begins to darken early these days. To combat the darkness, twinkling lights seem to pop up everywhere you go, brightening up the edges. Garnets live for this kind of light, every facet glitters, glowing and flashing like diamonds dipped in rich cabernet. Let them play in candlelight, let them frolic in firelight or strut their stuff in the twinkle lights on your tree.
This is a beautiful and unusual garnet locket, it isn’t set with the traditional rose cut bohemian garnets, and it’s not set with the true flat cut garnets of the Georgian era, rather it set with these very rich and very bright flat square cut garnets, some forty-nine (49) in all. When you add up the carat weight in glittering stones it’s about 16.5 carats. The stones form a lovely pattern on the front of this wonderful locket backed pendant, on the reverse is a locket with glass in a low karat gold, garnet gold frame, this gold tests as about 8 karat. The pendant is beautifully crafted and measures 59.6 mm top to bottom and 29.1 mm across, it is 14.35 mm deep. This wonderful piece is unmarked but tests as garnet gold, it weighs 12 grams. The garnets are generally in very nice condition, a few have very tiny flea bites that are visible with magnification,

Enameling, in some form or another, has been around since the 13th century BC. It took a long time to perfect it, though, some form of metal had to be used with early enamel, to hold each color distinctly apart from its neighbor (interesting note, these little metal bars were called cloisons, hence one name for this type of enameling is cloisonné). In the 15th century the technique of painted enamel was perfected and suddenly the cloisons were gone and wonderful, rich details could be gleaned from this once mosaic-like art form.
This Art Deco locket was hand crafted around 1920. It’s done all in silver and then machine turned to produce an overall engraved pattern, then the locket was fired with a rich opaque white enamel and a fluid lavender enamel which is translucent, giving it a look of constant movement. The shape, the concentric circles, the depth of the enamel covered engraving, all combine to make this a very dynamic piece. The face of this locket measures 37.3 mm from the top of the bale and 28 mm across, it’s 5.4 mm thick. This one opens easily and closes with a nice little snap; it weighs 8.1 grams.

You could wear this to opening night, get some curry before the show. There are a few good places along Shaftesbury Avenue, most offer a pre-show special. Wander, see what looks goods, what smells amazing. Yes, this would be perfect for opening night. Pair it with a simple black dress, that one that always comes out of the case with nary a wrinkle, those little green booties you brought because, well, you never know. Don’t have a chain the right length? That’s no problem, this one will look stunning on that length of silk cord which holds your jewelry bag shut, just don’t forget to put it back when you’re done.

He’s a writer, he’s humble when people compliment his prose and he’s bashful when they ask if he’d sign a copy for them. He’s a tempting, chiseled, idea, who listens to records from the 60s and sips brandy from a snifter. He’s the one you love and in the locket he gave you, you keep hidden a love letter, folded into a tiny rectangle. It was the first love letter he sent you, nearly two decades ago. You’ve memorized it by now, along with his hand writing, you know how his ‘L’s loop and his ‘E’s never look like ‘E’s.

Compacts were becoming popular around the turn of the 20th century. However, makeup wasn’t entirely socially acceptable. If a lady ventured into a beauty store, she would try and sneak in through the back. Some boutiques had secret hidden doors for the most important of the clientele. The idea of blending blush onto your cheeks in public was absurd. So, the clever women of the time decided to hide their powders, creams, and rouge in witty ways. Makeup could be found in pendants, like this piece, brooches, pocketbooks, bangles, and even walking sticks. Lipsticks could be found hidden away in the handle of a hairbrush!
This fantastic compact doubles as a locket. Hand crafted and set with a beautiful mother of pearl pansy on the front, this lovely piece is hallmarked as having been made in 1907. The compact contains it’s original downy puff and would have held powder, likely highly scented. The pendant measures 59.8 mm from top to bottom and 49.4 mm across, it’s 10.4 mm thick and weighs 23.6 grams. Open it up and you’ll find a gilded interior and small mirror set into the lid. The compact is hallmarked on the inside with marks showing that it was made in Birmingham, England in 1907, it also has the makers mark of ‘CS & FS’ for the firm of Conelium Desormeaux Saunders & James Francis Hollings Shepherd whose mark was first registered in 1893 and who worked in Birmingham, Chester and London.
The Edwardian era was the beginning of making makeup and compacts culturally acceptable. Even makeup counters were (slowly) being introduced to stores. Women spent hours applying creams to their skin as skin care was the most important aspect of the makeup routine. Rouge for those rosy cheeks, matchsticks for those smoky eyes, eyebrow pencils for that thin brow line, and plotting paper for a light complexion were the mainstays of the era.
