Golden Basket of Flowers Gemstone Brooch Watch Hanger
Before the wrist watch was invented (for soldiers in World War I), there was the pocket watch. And just like the electronic of today are always aiming to get lighter, these watches were always aiming to get smaller. A petite watch could get lost in a pocket (or damaged), but worn on a brooch it was both convenient and protected. This wonderful brooch was made to hold such a watch. A sunny bouquet of flowers set with iridescent opals and sparkling sapphires was the perfect compliment to watching time go by!
This wonderful brooch was hand crafted in 15 karat gold (how very English of it!) in about 1880. It is set with small but glowing gems, 2 sapphires, 4 pearls, 2 opal and 1 pink sapphire grace this bright and happy bouquet, all tied together with a bit of twisted rope!
This brooch measures 18 mm top to bottom and 26.8 mm across, it has a safety clasp and watch hanger to the reverse. This brooch is marked simply ‘Gold’ and has been acid tested as 15 karat. Made in England, it weighs 2.3 grams.
