Can I tell you a little secret about English hallmarks? The bigger the mark, the older the piece. Why do you think this is? My personal guess is that it’s gotten easier to have a good magnifier around, readers are a lot easier to come by these days than they were when this beauty was assayed with her big hallmarks in Chester in 1888.
This lovely bypass ring is super crisp. She’s set with eight (8) very sparkly old European cut diamonds, about a half (0.50) a carat in total. The two ends of the bypass that form this design are set with round faceted sapphires, dark buy very intense blue in color. The sapphires each measure 4.4x4.4x3.18 mm and weight about .56 carats, for a total weight in sapphire in this ring of 1.12 carats. The face of this ring is 8.65 mm north to south and 16.7 mm across, it narrows to 2 millimeters at the back of the band. The ring is marked with the aforementioned English hallmarks for Chester, England, and the letter E for the year 1888; it is also marked ’18’ indicating the gold content of 18 karat. This ring is a size 8.5 and weighs 2.9 grams.
