In Vatican City, in St. Peter’s Basilica, resides the most amazing piece of art that I have ever seen. And, I’ve seen a lot of art. Michelangelo’s carved marble statue of Mary holding the body of Jesus exudes such emotion, transmits her grief and her sorry so beautifully that I cried spontaneously when I saw it, and mine weren’t the only damp eyes in the room, that’s for certain.
This antique pendant celebrates this fantastic statue with a hand drawn enamel Pieta on its front surrounded by enameled church windows. This hand crafted pendant was made in 835 silver and is marked as such, it’s striking with its bold blue enameling. The back of the pendant is marked with “Roma” and was undoubtably a tourist piece made around 1900-1910. It measures 33.5 mm from north to south and 25.3 mm across and weighs 6.6 grams.
