Antique Victorian Enamel Locket Backed Pendant

The receiver of this locket was clearly held with a high admiration. It dons the blue buckle symbol for The Order of the Garter, founded in 1348 by King Edward III. It’s an Order of chivalry and the third most prestigious honor one can receive in the United Kingdom today. The Order of the Garter buckle symbolizes holding a loved one close.  

Rumor has it, the Countess of Salisbury was dancing with the King. Upon twirling, her blue garter fell to the floor, revealing itself to the entire ballroom. Courtiers laughed at her expense until the King picked up her garter, placed it on his own leg, and declared, “Shame on him who thinks evil of it!”. Hence, the blue buckle symbol on this handsome locket. 

This Antique Mid Victorian gold locket pendant boasts an Order of the Garter buckle on the front and a photograph of a gallant gentleman on the back. It was handcrafted in England in 9 karat gold and has been acid tested. Ornate engraving graces the front of this oval pendant, surrounding a blue enamel buckle. A shield is engraved at the very center. This piece weighs 3.2 grams and measures 26 x 19.2 x 4 mm.
