Vintage Silver Enamel Tudor Rose Pendant English

$ 185.00

The War of the Roses was fought between the two greatest houses of England, the House of Lancaster and the House of York. Both houses had long used roses in their emblems, the York’s a white rose and the Lancaster’s a red one. When the War of the Roses ended in 1485 and Henry Tudor of house Lancaster ascended the throne as King of England, his rather tenuous claim to the throne was cemented through his marriage to Elizabeth of York. Thusly, the House of Tudor was born and would rule England for more than a century. To form an emblem for this new dynasty, a double rose was created, white on red, each with five petals and leaves around. This rose has become an iconic part of British culture and to this day is embedded in the Royal Seal of England.

This wonderful Tudor Rose pendant is vintage, it was made in Sheffield, England in 1993 and is fully hallmarked to the reverse. It showcases a simple all-white version of the classic rose in enamel on sterling silver. This pendant is 32 mm north to south and 22.1 mm across, it weighs 5.4 grams.
