Some lockets feel like keepsakes; this one feels like a secret. Its garnet-red enamel glows with the depth of old velvet drapes in a Paris salon, flickering with every shift of light. Across that luminous field, an intricate pattern of tiny gold scrolls and star-like blossoms curls and unfurls, each one placed with the precision of a master enameler. At the center blooms a six-petaled motif set with bright emerald-green glass, a small firework of color against the moody red ground. And framing it all is a border of raised white enamel “pearls,” each one crisp and perfect, an illusion so convincing it takes a second look to realize they, too, were born from flame.
Handcrafted in France around 1870, this silver locket measures 45 mm north to south including the bail, 26.2 mm across, and 9.4 mm thick. It is worked in translucent red enamel over a textured ground, decorated with raised white and golden enamel details and small emerald-green glass accents. It is hallmarked with the French crab mark for minimum .800 silver and weighs 11.83 grams.
A jewel like this doesn’t merely hold a memory, it creates one. Rich, dramatic, and unmistakably Parisian, it invites a little mystery, a little theatre, and the possibility of carrying something precious just out of sight.
