Antique Multi-gemstone Brooch Pin by Dorrie Nossiter

One of four women who were predominate in the late Arts and Crafts movement in England was a woman named Dorrie Nossiter. Born in the waining years of Victorian England, she started out life in Aston, a quaint village in the West Midlands, just outside of Birmingham where she studied at the Municipal School of Art. Her style was marked by her use of bold color and floral, curvilinear lines and she often made forms that paid homage to classical Scottish or Celtic motifs.

This dirk-inspired brooch was hand crafted by Nossiter in about 1930 and is set with juicy gemstones in autumnal hues of green, orange and gold. The largest of the gems, and the visual anchor of this brooch, is a pear cut stone which weighs about 3.67 carats. The most central stone is a beautifully faceted peridot of about 2.02 carats; it is further set with orange and red garnets of 4.2 and 3.5 mm respectively and two glowing cabochon cut carnelian gems of 4.5 mm across. This glowing brooch is hand wrought in silver with gold or gold washed accents to the front. It is 62 mm long and 18.2 mm north to south at the widest point, it has a C claps to the reverse and weighs 6.4 grams.

Dorrie Nossiter rarely signed her pieces and this one is no exception. I am attributing it to her, without a doubt, based on the workmanship and style. It comes in the box I purchased it in this wonderful old box and am passing it along, how long they’ve been together, I have no way of knowing!
