Edwardian 5 Stone Opal Diamond Ring 18k Gold

When I lived in Manhattan, I was unofficially adopted by my downstairs neighbor, an elderly woman named Rose who had been one of the beau monde of her day and who insisted I call her Auntie. I would visit Auntie Rose every week or so, and we would gab comfortably in her living room which was full-to-the-brim with books, art, tapestries, photos…more like a museum than an apartment. From the black and white photos of her in the 40’s, she had been quite the social butterfly of Harlem, as well as a ravishing beauty. Auntie Rose always wore lipstick and tasteful, but exquisite jewelry. She and I both had a penchant for opals, and we would comb through her collection while she regaled me with stories of her romances and her accomplishments. She used to say opals made her think of “looking up at heaven through the clouds.” Rose was a true beauty, inside and out.
This 18 karat gold Opal and diamond Ring is exactly like looking through wispy clouds into a celestial dance of light and color. Made in London, England in 1902, the ring is set with five shimmering opals cradled in a band of lustrous 18k gold. Nestled between the opals are eight rose cut diamonds. The effect is serene and bright, exceptionally elegant. The opals graduate in size from the two outer stones measuring 4.5 by 3.6 mm, to the next stones of 5 by 4.2 mm and 6 by 4.5 mm, to the center stone which measures 7.6 by 4.5 mm with a depth of 2.3 mm. The face of this lovely ring measures 7.6 mm wide, 20 mm across, and 4.6 mm deep. The band width is 1.7 mm. It weights 4.8 grams and is a size 8.25. The hallmarks present are the number 18, a Leopard Head, and ‘g’ for 1902.
