Scottish Granite Heart Brooch 'Forget Me Not'

Forget me not. It’s something we all think in some way, that even after our lives have ended, we don’t want to be forgotten. In a time when people died much more easily and much more often, it was a particularly poignant sentiment.
This wonderful Scottish pebble brooch is set with a smooth heart shaped piece of granite, most likely mined from the Aberdeen region of Scotland. This smooth expanse of stone is set into a silver mounting which is engraved with the words “Forget Me Not” and topped with intertwined hands, a nod to the traditional Claddagh motif. This brooch was hand crafted in about 1880, and measures 52.5 mm north to south and 44.3 mm across, it is 13 mm thick and weighs 18.9 grams. The stone heart measures 33x32 mm. This brooch is unmarked but has been carefully acid tested as sterling silver.
