It begins with a flash of white, cool, luminous, and unexpectedly serene; shaped into the centuries-old emblem of French royalty. You can almost imagine it pinned to the lapel of someone stealing away from a winter ball in 1870, breath rising like fog in the gaslight, the fleur-de-lis glowing softly against velvet, a small, intricate watch hanging below. Its surface curves like silk caught in a breeze, the white enamel smooth and untroubled, while a slender belt of old rose-cut diamonds adds the faintest glimmer, the kind of sparkle you notice only when someone turns their head to answer a question meant for them alone.
Handcrafted in about 1870, this watch hanger brooch is worked in 18 karat gold and finished with lovely matte white enamel. Five rose-cut diamonds, each about 1.7 mm, arc gently across the center, set in a slim band. The piece measures 36.1 mm north to south, 22.2 mm across, and 7 mm deep, and weighs 6.99 grams. It carries the French owl hallmark, attesting to its 18 karat gold content. The hinge and c-catch are original, with a swivel bail which allows for additional adornment.
