Antique Victorian Sweetheart Brooch Pin Mizpah Silver Gold

This beautiful Victorian double shield brooch bears both the symbols for Faith, Hope and Charity, and is also hand engraved with an old biblical phrase found in Genesis 31:49 commonly known as “Mizpah”, which is a Hebrew word meaning ‘watchtower’. It reads, ‘The Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent from one another’. Victorians and Edwardians adored this phrase (and the these symbols of the divine) as they marked a bond between two people with God as witness. It was meant as a keepsake and was most often exchanged between a couple during the Victorian Era, and again during The Great War, especially those who were to be apart for some time and that had promised their loyalty to one another.

This antique Edwardian brooch pin was handcrafted in Birmingham, England, in 1899. It’s made in silver accented in 9k gold, and features two shields overlapping together. It is embossed with the word, ‘MIZPAH’, above a faith, hope and charity motif, is fully hallmarked and bears the anchor mark for Birmingham, the lion passant for English sterling silver, the letter ‘z’, for 1899 as well as a maker’s mark. It measures 27.0 x 40.2 x 3.2 millimeters, and weighs 4.5 grams.

This wonderful and sentimental antique brooch is full of history, meaning and romance, and has traveled through the centuries to await a spot at the top of your jewelry box!
