When you’re visiting the bustling metropolis that is London, it’s easy to forget that you are actually on an island, or really a series of islands, the British isles. Yet, for millennia these little islands have had a deep and rich connection to the seas and channels that surround them. This wonderful brooch brings that connection into full focus with its vivid imagery and ode to the life of the islander.
This fabulous Scottish style brooch was most likely made in England in about 1870. It could have been made in Scotland, but in actuality most of the ’Scottish’ or ‘Pebble’ jewelry made in this time was actually made in the jewelry centers of Birmingham and Chester and then sent up to Scotland to be sold in shops where these renditions on the Scottish jewelry heritage were gobbled up by tourists who followed the Royal Court to their castle at Barmoral. They were brought back to England as souvenirs.
This brooch has a lovely carved top cross that’s done in a natural slice of carnelian agate. The fittings are beautifully rendered in sterling silver and hand detailed and engraved. A wonderful twist of wire wraps the whole anchor in a perfect rendition of rope. The brooch is quite large at 78 mm north to south and 41.3 mm across at the widest point, it measures 14.1 mm from the back to front and weighs 13.9 grams. It is not marked as most weren’t, but has been carefully tested as sterling.
This fantastic brooch would look equally great on a cashmere wrap or the lapel of crisp suit.
