I’m not entirely certain why, but when the weather starts to turn chilly, I feel my Scottish roots start to stir. Maybe it’s the color of these fantastic Scottish pieces that seems to well coordinated with Autumn, or maybe it’s the idea of wrapping myself in wool in bright plaid patterns for warmth and to add a touch of color to the landscape. Whatever it is, there is just something about Scottish brooch and these shorter fall days that seem to go hand in hand.
I just love when the stones are this beautifully cut and set, they were clearly custom cut for this brooch. They are in very good condition without any dings, dents or chips, one of the brighter red stones has a hairline crack, but it’s quite stable. This larger scale brooch measures 56.5 mm north to south and across and is 13 mm deep. The stones are set in sterling silver, which is unmarked but has been acid tested. The reverse of the brooch has a jump ring which probably originally held a safety chain, it could be used to wear this piece as a lovely pendant. It weighs 31.7 grams. A beautifully made piece of Scottish pebble jewelry!
When Queen Victoria's Royal Court followed her to Scotland and Balmoral Castle, the demand for Scottish jewelry in all forms flourished. Brooches were the norm, kilt-pins and cloak pins are often found. This gorgeous cross shaped brooch is set with shaped and polished bloodstone, carnelian and moss agates and a round, sparkling citrine at its center. It was made in England in about 1880.
