Antique Neoclassical French 18k Gold Blue Enamel Earrings c. 1820
Love knots with a flourish! These two hundred year old earrings are as bright and modern today as they were when they were hand crafted in the France of King Louis XVIII.
These fabulous French earrings are Neoclassical, they are done with dormouse fittings; this classical French ‘back to front’ style of wire makes the earrings sit more upright on the ear and holds it face forward on the ear. These earrings are made of 18 karat gold and decorated with lively engraving and bright, turquoise blue, enamel. These are unmarked and measure 26.7 mm north to south and 16.5 mm across, together they are a mere 3.8 grams, they are super light and comfortable, they acid test at 18 karat gold.
These back to front fittings might be new to some people, they are called ‘dormouse’ which means ‘sleeper’ because they are a very comfortable style earring, especially for sleeping. It might take some getting used to this style back, the key to putting them on is to slowly wiggle them from behind while applying just a little light pressure, be patient and wait for the earring to work it’s way though, you’ll be an expert at this style in no time and you’ll find yourself seeking them out!
