The early years of the 20th century were an age of sentiment, when jewels were engraved with dates to preserve their story. This five-stone sapphire and diamond ring carries just such a trace of its past, the faint remains of an inscription marked 1918. The rich blue of the sapphires, framed by sparkling diamonds, would have made this a cherished token of love and remembrance.

Handcrafted in Birmingham in 18 karat gold, the ring holds three sapphires totaling approximately 0.44 carats. The center stone measuring 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.4 mm, flanked by two 2.5 mm stones. Two old-cut diamonds, about 2 mm each, provide contrast and fire. The face of the ring measures 5 mm north to south and 18 mm across, rising 2.5 mm off the finger, with a 2.2 mm band width at the back. It weighs 3.05 grams and is a US size 7. The hallmarks include the crown, “18,” a partial anchor, and the maker’s mark “A.M.” The anchor punch is incomplete, likely lost during an old resizing, along with any original date letter.

Worn smooth with time, yet still glowing with color and light, this ring carries a quiet poignancy. A jewel that has already marked past lifetime’s milestones, and now waits to continue its story with another hand.
