Hunting in the early 1900s wasn’t just a mans game. Women were invited to attend, and they most certainly knew how to dress for the occasion. An adventurous lady of means would ride sidesaddle on her horse, while wearing red to prevent any shots from coming her way. This woman would have known that thematic accessories were also required, such as a hunting-inspired bracelet to accent her black riding hat.
This beautifully hand crafted antique Austrian bracelet features a design inspired from the love of hunting. It was made in Austria, around 1900, in silver. It has a hefty feel at 35.0 grams and 7.75 inches of length. Each hunting motif link is round and 18.8 mm in diameter. Every piece is different from the others as there are eight charms in total, consisting of a dog, a deer, a quail, a wolf, a duck, a boar, a hare, and a raptor. It is marked with the silver content mark, ‘800’ and the maker’s mark reads, ‘BAS’.
This bracelet is a wonderful quality made piece. It’s not just for hunting anymore, but it would make a fabulous gift!

This chain is for romantic nights in Italy with sweet red wine on a brown brick terrace. It’s for golden sunsets in the distance with a nice looking man, with a smile as wide as the horizon. All but four of the links are made in 15 karat gold and measure 24 x 6.4 mm each. At one point during the history of this beautiful antique chain, four more links were added in the back, around the clasp, they are made in 9 karat gold and measure 25.5 x 7 mm; they are perfectly color matched. This piece has been acid tested. Many of the links bear gold purity hallmarks that read, ‘15’, and ‘.625’. There is also a faded maker’s mark.
Versatile. Gold. Antique. What more could a woman ask for?

He’s a writer, he’s humble when people compliment his prose and he’s bashful when they ask if he’d sign a copy for them. He’s a tempting, chiseled, idea, who listens to records from the 60s and sips brandy from a snifter. He’s the one you love and in the locket he gave you, you keep hidden a love letter, folded into a tiny rectangle. It was the first love letter he sent you, nearly two decades ago. You’ve memorized it by now, along with his hand writing, you know how his ‘L’s loop and his ‘E’s never look like ‘E’s.
This handsome oval silver locket was hand crafted in England in 1880. The front features an engraved design with beautifully engraved ivy leaves, that carry the Victorian sentiment of love, “I cling to thee”. Her curtains were pulled aside, revealing a black night sky, without a star or moon in sight. The wind was heard but she was busy, writing, passionately creating a story of mythical creatures and happy endings. The flicker of candlelight emanated from the tall dark red candlesticks burning in the corner. The flame’s light hit the ring on her right hand, the hand scribbling wildly with a feather quill on thick parchment. The ring glowed as though she had the sun hidden somewhere inside of it. Her content ginger cat sat on the edge of her oak desk, watching the specks of light that jumped from the prismatic opals on her ring to the darkened walls of the library, like a kaleidoscope.
This vintage English Art Deco ring was handcrafted in London, in 1925. There are five luminescent round cabochon opals set on a square face. The center opal is the largest, measuring 4.5 mm in diameter and 1.9 mm deep. The other four are all 3.3 mm in diameter and 1.5 mm in depth, approximately. This gorgeous 18 karat gold piece is truly Art Deco in its display with dazzling colors, and geometric shape. It is fully hallmarked and bears the crown for England, leopard head for London, the gold purity mark, ‘18’, and the date letter, ‘k’. This ring is a size 5.75 and weighs 4.5 grams.
Wear the Jazz Age around your finger with this fiery opal ring! It would make a fantastic birthday gift, or just a fun little accessory for yourself.

Precious opals are known for their diffraction of light, called ‘play of color’, in which rainbow colors shine from inside the stone like a kaleidoscope of firelight. This pink precious opal does just that in a mesmerizing fashion.
Opals have been used in jewelry as far back as 4000 BC, in Kenya. They were worn in Ancient Rome and considered to hold all the power of every gemstone because of the opal’s magical play of every color. The Romans called this stone, ‘opalus’, which means ‘stone of several elements’. In 75 AD, the Roman scholar Pliny took note, “Some opali carry such a play within them that they equal the deepest and richest colors of painters. Others simulate the flaming fire of burning sulfur and even the bright blaze of burning oil.”
This pink precious opal ring was handcrafted during the Arts and Crafts movement in the Edwardian Era, around 1910. This piece is European, likely Belgian. The pink opal is oval and an ellipsoid or double cabochon. It measures 11 x 8 x 5.9 mm. It is set in 18 karat gold on a size 8 band. This ring weighs 4.2 grams. It is hallmarked with the gold purity mark, ‘18CT’. The ring face measures 11.5 x 9.3 x 6.2 mm off the finger with a band width of 2.4 mm.
Most of the world’s opals are found in Australia. There is an Aboriginal legend that says opals came from where the Creator touched his feet to the ground as he descended from the heavens on a rainbow.

Three and five stone rings were quite popular in the late Victorian era and their popularity spilled over into Edwardian times. This fantastic turn of the (last) century ring made my heart go pitter-patter when I picked it up at the Portobello Road market early one Saturday morning. The rich, plummy color of the rubies and the sparkling bright diamonds combined to simply dazzle my eyes!
This wonderful 18 karat gold hand made ring features deeply carved scrolling shoulders and elegant lines. The old European cut center diamond measures 4.2 x 3.8 x 2.3 mm deep and weighs about .25 carats, the other two diamonds weigh about .1 carats for a total diamond weight of .45 carats. The two rich red rubies are about .25 carats each for a total weight of .5 carats. The ring is a size 9.5 and could be resized a little bit up or down, it weighs 4.2 grams. It is marked '18' indicating gold content, as well as bearing the hallmarks for having been crafted in Chester, England in the year 1909.

Lady Clara had spent the past 12 months in full mourning. This morning her lady’s maid kindly reminded her she could begin to incorporate a tiny bit of color into her usual black bombazine wardrobe. Half mourning was to commence and continue until the two year mark. Although her heart still hurt from the parting of her beloved Mr. Benjamin, she was glad to add a bit of color to her daily routine. Undoubtedly, she desired to attend social events in town again, aching for companionship. She traveled to Jay’s on Regent Street to customize her next mourning dress, they were the best, after all. So carefully she chose her jewelry, with just the right amount of white, and her fabrics, with shades of gray and lavender.
Handcrafted with 46 smooth spherical agate beads, this silver clasped necklace is a wonderful piece! I used to come across beads like this more often, but they are becoming a rare find. Necklaces like this gorgeous hand carved strand of black, white and brown banded agate beads were often worn during late the mourning period when a woman could incorporate white into her all black wardrobe. The long strand of graduated beads measure 9.4 mm in diameter at the back and increase in size up to 19.5 mm in diameter at the front of the strand. This necklace weighs 105.9 grams and is 22.5 inches in length. The clasp has been acid tested as sterling silver, but we couldn’t quite get to enough of the chain that they are strung on to test the metal, it might be brass, it might be gold, I suspect it is a later re-stringing which was done after 1900. This beautiful strand is in good shape, with only a very few small dings from it’s over 150 years of life.
Victorian mourning jewelry was worn by both men and women after the loss of a loved one. Queen Victoria lost her Prince Albert when she was merely 42 and stayed in mourning until her death nearly 40 years later; thus increasing the popularity of mourning jewelry, as well as memorial pieces.

We decided to meet on Wednesday afternoon in the Duke of Wellington, a pub on London’s famed Portobello Road. The pub is mostly empty when we go in to order pints and snacks, it’s a cool rainy afternoon and the road, which bustles with activity much of the week, feels empty today. I’m sipping a cider and listing to the men talk politics while waiting for a friend; we’ll head up to her closed shop to do a little browsing after we eat (private shopping, lucky me!). She walks in looking fantastic as usual, a classic English beauty, she rocks heels and trainers equally well. Today she’s rocking these earrings and I can’t take my eyes off of them from the moment she enters the pub.
“Don’t worry, Victoria”, she smiles, “they’re for you!”
These fabulous earrings will make any outfit from casual to black tie. Handcrafted in 18 karat gold, they are set with 36 creamy white pearls, each 2 mm in diameter and further set with 14 Old European cut diamonds. The center diamonds weigh about .1 carats each and the other 12 diamonds are rose cuts. The stars around the diamonds are accented with blue enamel. These gorgeous earrings are most certainly made from another piece of jewelry, but not by me. Likely they were buttons or maybe cufflinks, they make fabulous earrings. The pendants were made around the same time the Duke of Wellington opened, in the late 1850s. The earrings have post backs now and from the post to the bottom they measure 28.6 mm and are 17.3 mm across. Together these earrings weigh 3.4 grams. These beauties are unmarked, but have been acid tested to verify their metal content.

The witches heart, with a tail that almost always twists to the right, was a piece of jewelry that had a purpose. Originally it was used as a talisman to ward off evil spirits, especially during childbirth and nursing. This style of heart had become so popular in Scotland in the 17th century that it was sold from small stalls or locked booths and so is sometimes also called a 'Luckenbooth'. By the time that this double Witches heart was made in the 19th century, the meaning had changed somewhat and these double hearts were often given as tokens of love, to indicated that the wearer had ‘bewitched’ the giver!
This fabulous Victorian double Witches heart brooch is beautifully enameled with rich matte light blue and white forget-me-not flowers making up each heart. It was hand crafted, most likely in England, in about 1860-70. This brooch does show some signs of having an old repair to the C catch, please look carefully at the photos to see this, it’s quite stable and I wouldn’t touch it as is it’s really unnecessary. This brooch measures 30.8 mm top to bottom and 28.7 mm across, it weighs 4.5 grams. This unmarked brooch acid tests as 15 karat gold. This wonderful brooch can also easily be worn as a pendant.
I love a good witches heart brooch, but I was over the moon to find this unusual enameled one with such a sweet sentimentality to it!

Hand crafted in 9 karat gold in about 1890, this heart shaped locket contains two frames to hold your photos. The locket measures 32.2 mm north to south and 20 mm across, it weighs 3.6 grams. The locket is marked to the reverse with ‘9ct Back and Front’, meaning that the interior frame is metal.

Whenever I see a ring like this one, it really gets me to wondering. The stones in this ring are all old European cut diamonds, probably cut around 1880-1910, and yet this ring surely was made in the 1950s or 60s, so how did these diamonds end up here? What is their back story? Were they part of a Belle Époque brooch, links of a Victorian diamond bracelet, drops of an Edwardian necklace, a single fabulous earring whose mate was lost somewhere along the way? I guess in truth neither you nor I will ever truly know where they came from, what their previous life was. All we know for sure is that now they are here, in this fantastic ring, sparkling away as they've done for over a hundred years!
Handcrafted in France, this 18 karat white gold ring features a bedazzling array of diamonds, thirty-one old European cut round diamonds that add up to over 3.5 carats in all. The center stone is about .4 carats, six of the surrounding stones are about .15-.18 carats each and the other twenty-four weigh about .1-.12 carats each. The diamonds form a lovely knot or bow motif and are truly all sparkle, all of the time. This ring would be easy to resize, currently it is a size 4.75, and it weighs 8.3 grams. The ring is marked on the back of the band with the French eagle head mark, assayed in Paris and has also been acid tested to verify that it is indeed, 18 karat gold. The face of this ring measures 19.5 mm from north to south, and 19.5 mm across, it narrows to 2 mm at the back of the band.
Personally, I just adore old cut diamonds, so my heart did a little pitter-patter when I came across this beauty set with all these old cut gems. My own sneaking suspicion is that these diamonds started out life in a brooch and that some inheritee of said brooch decided to have it remade into this much more wearable and super stylie Retro cocktail ring!

I found this precious golden bauble on my last buying trip, in England. It was a misty day, but one of those English ones, so the gray clouds seemed cheerful and happy. I walked the city to arrive at the Sunday morning market a mere moments after it opened, stopping for a coffee along the way. The booth of first person I wanted to see was crowded, so I waited (im)patiently, standing just off to the side. As I waiting I looked through the case at the next booth over and spotted this wonderful locket. At first glance, I assumed this was meant for a lady with the initials of MD, meaning it was to be rich in history, and loved dearly. My mother has the initials ‘MD’ and so I asked to look at it, thinking of her birthday just a few weeks away. When he handed it to me to have a look I was struck by how weighty it was, and when I opened it I was delighted by the contents, it turned out that MD wasn’t for a person, it was for an education!
This unique vintage 9 karat gold doctor’s bag pendant was handcrafted in England, in 1945. The front and back are both engraved with the letters, ‘MD’, which stand for ‘Medical Doctor’. This fun pendant opens to reveal three golden doctor tools! Inside, there is a syringe, a scissors, and a stethoscope. This pendant measures 26 x 23.4 x 12.2 mm and weighs 15.6 grams. It is fully hallmarked with the mark for London, the gold purity marks, ‘9’, and ‘.375’, the date letter, ‘k’, and a maker’s mark.
For the medical school graduate in your life, or just a fabulous charm to keep all to yourself, because honestly, it’s adorable, this pendant is perfect!
