A wyvern is a two-footed dragon, a creature of fantasy, dating back thousands of years to Ancient Greece. “Dragon” originates from the Greek, “drakon”, meaning “huge serpent”. This make-believe animal the Ancient Greeks developed was likely just that, an abnormally large serpent with no wings or legs. Their dragons guarded treasures, shrines, and springs. They made homes near water inside caverns and they slept with their eyes open. Wyverns and dragons are both frequented throughout English heraldry, representing valor and protection. During the Victorian era, they were commonly associated with industry and mysterious faraway places.
This gorgeously detailed antique French gold and opal brooch was handcrafted around 1890. It is of a ferocious golden wyvern with two legs, a set of wings, and a fireball made out of an opal. It is as detailed on the back as the front, a true sign of exquisite workmanship. This brooch measures 35 x 40 mm and weighs 14.8 grams. This piece is hallmarked and bears the French eagle’s head, a cartouche containing the letters “H” and “P” with an anchor, and a variety of other French marks.
The Victorians loved their symbolism. Wyverns, a creature of guardianship and strength, has been a popular motif for centuries. This brooch pin is a lasting collectable.

When I first looked at this ring, I saw it as a very interesting love knot motif, but then the more I looked, the more I thought that perhaps it might be somethings else. Love knots are usually made from one piece of gold going round and round, symbolic of unending love and affection. This ring is actually made of links and it reminded me of the short curb link bar brooches that were worn by the Suffragettes in Victorian England. The symbolism isn’t unending love, but rather strength in unity. The date of 1901, hallmarked into the ring, would fit with this idea. Either way it is a lovely and very stylish ring and would make a wonderful stacking ring or wedding ring.
Hand crafted in 18 karat gold in London in 1901, this ring is a size 8.25 and weighs 6 grams. It measures 7 mm north to south and 19 mm across at the face and has a low profile of 2.5 mm of the finger. It has a makers mark which I can’t quite make out and is otherwise clearly hallmarked for 18 karat gold, and the date and place of manufacture.
Hard to imagine, but it would take another 17 years for women in the UK to get the vote and another 19 years for women in the US, as new winds of change swept across the globe.

She woke up to a rustic, metallic autumn morning. Coffee. It's always time for more coffee. And a good book. Coffee and Hemingway.
Sigh. It's the simple things.
Walking her chocolate lab, Minnie. Jumping with her galoshes in crunchy piles of orange and brown leaves. Watching the cloud shapes morph as they pass over the lake. More coffee.
And rings like this one. Solid, simple, sparkling in the autumn morning sun. Flashing with each throw of a beloved tennis ball.
This Victorian 18k gold diamond buckle ring was handcrafted in Birmingham, England in 1873. There are two old cut diamonds adorning this ring, totaling .3 carats total weight. Inside the shank there are various hallmarks-a crown (England), the number 18 (gold), and anchor (Birmingham), the letter y (1875), and a maker's mark that reads, 'CyBs’, for the goldsmith firm of Coley Brothers. The band is 6.5 mm wide, and 1.5 mm thick. This piece has been professionally acid tested to ensure 18k gold. This ring is a size 8 and weighs 9.3 grams.

"Ye are Blood of my Blood, and Bone of my Bone. I give ye my Body, that we Two might be One. I give ye my Spirit, 'til our Life shall be Done.
You cannot possess me for I belong to myself But while we both wish it, I give you that which is mine to give. You cannot command me for I am a free person But I shall serve you in those ways you require And the honeycomb will taste sweeter coming from my hand." - Traditional Celtic Wedding Vows
I admit it, this spectacular Posy holder brooch made me a bit weak in the knees when I came across it on a visit to Scotland. Hand crafted of sterling silver in 1881, this brooch is done in the shape of beautifully detailed Thistle, the flower of Scotland. Measuring a generous 52.4 mm north to south and 19.9 mm across and is 14 mm deep, it is empty at the top and meant to hold a boutonniere or even a single flower. This piece is fully hallmarked to the reverse with a registration mark which indicates that it was marked on June 15th, 1881, and it also has the hallmarks for Scotland, Edinburgh, and a z for the year 1881, as well as Queen Victoria in profile which means it is made in sterling silver. The brooch has a long pin stem and C clasp and weighs 7.0 grams.
Are you looking for the perfect wedding accessory for the well-dressed groom? Why not try this instant heirloom? At almost 140 years old, it’s ready for another century or two of use!
A note from Victoria: If you are using this to hold a full boutonniere, we found it works best to also pin the flowers so that they don't fall out!

Symbolism was powerful to the Victorians. With strict rules of society and culture they had to express themselves in non-verbal ways, like through art, music and literature. When it came to jewelry, symbolism and creativity were combined. This faith, hope, and charity brooch was a popular motif during the Victorian era. We have the cross, a traditional symbol indicative of faith, the heart, a symbol reaching back thousands of years, which is representative of charity and last but not least, there’s the anchor; long associated with sailors at sea, it indicates hope and steadfastness. A sailor hopes to land an anchor in a safe place after a long journey.
This silver gilt brooch was handcrafted in Birmingham, England in 1900. It’s a late Victorian brooch that features the traditional cross, heart, and anchor motif set on a crescent. It also spells out the words, “Faith Hope Charity”. This antique pin measures 41.5 x 21 mm and weighs 2.8 grams. It bears the assay mark for Birmingham, the lion mark for sterling, the date letter, “a” for 1900, and the maker’s mark, “P&T”.
A faith, hope, and charity accessory was typically gifted by sweethearts, from mothers to children, or between sisters.

Ancient Greek myth tells us that while the Creator was giving all flowers their color, he heard a soft whisper, “Forget me not!”. By the time this tiny voice was heard, nearly all his colors had been used up. He was only able to gift this little flower a small amount of blue. None the less, this flower was very pleased and delighted to don such a lovely blue shade, and so he wore it with pride and happiness. During Medieval times, ladies wore this flower’s symbol as a sign of enduring love and faithfulness.
This antique Victorian 9 karat gold brooch was handcrafted in England in 1896. The front of this oval engraved brooch features a motif of forget-me-not flowers with a garter or buckle frame. The front piece opens to reveal a secret message: Forget Me Not. This brooch pin measures 38.5 x 18.5 mm and it weighs 3.8 grams. This piece has been fully hallmarked as it bears the gold purity mark, “9.CARAT” and the registration number, “RD273697”. There is also a maker’s mark that reads, “W.J.H”.
This perfect brooch pin would tidy up any jacket lapel and would be a lovely golden accent on a winter scarf.

The Victorians loved their symbolism, especially good luck charms. Clovers and horseshoes soared in popularity during the later 1800s, right when this locket was made. Horseshoes were thought to be a source of good luck and to protect against evil. Wearing a charm like this one was considered essential for daywear, especially after Prince Albert gifted his beloved Queen, Victoria a bracelet of nine heart lockets, in memory of each of their children. Victorians also wore jewelry that expressed their hobbies, the wearer of this bauble could easily have been an equestrian lover.
This antique Victorian silver horseshoe locket was handcrafted around 1890. This shiny pendant features a horseshoe motif that opens to reveal a space for a favorite photograph! Both the front and back have this detailed repoussé horseshoe design, and even the sides are engraved with structural lines. This locket weighs 9.1 grams and measures 38 x 26 x 7.3 mm overall. Ever notice how sometimes a windy and cool Spring day has the same feel and smell as a similar day in the fall? Today is a day like that, and this wonderfully large Scottish brooch is the perfect accessory on a Spring fall-like day, it keeps my wool wrap firmly in place, despite the hefty breeze.
This wonderful piece of ‘pebble’ jewelry is set with a huge central faceted citrine in a brownish golden hue. The citrine measures 20 mm across and 10.5 mm deep and weighs about 20 carats. The surround is set with colorful agates and small sparkling citrine gems. The brooch is hand crafted in sterling silver and has a hinged hanger so that it can be worn as a pendant when desired. The brooch measures 52 mm across and weighs 28 grams. Unmarked, it has been acid tested to verify the metal.
Scottish jewelry became popular in the 1860s when the English court started traveling to Scotland where Prince Albert had purchased Balmoral Castle for his bride, Queen Victoria. Much of it was actually produced in England and then shipped to Scotland and sold to the ‘tourists’ who brought it right back to England as proof of their adventures.

The demand for Scottish jewelry thrived during Queen Victoria's time at Balmoral, her castle in the Scottish highlands. It's easy to see why with this impressive and unique sword and shield pin. It is reminiscent of a traditional officer's basket hilted broadsword with the Victorian Royal Scottish Infantry-regal with details on every inch.
This Late Victorian silver sword and shield agate kilt brooch was handcrafted in Scotland, 1880. This brooch is set with bloodstone, on the blade of the sword and center of the shield, and accented with carnelian, decorating the shield and sword head, and marble, making the base of the shield. Silver covers the tip of the sword, with ornate engraving, silver also covers the handle of the sword, forming a regal flower around the hilt. It has been professionally acid tested. It measures 4 3/16 x 1 1/4 inches and weighs 24.4 grams.
This beautiful piece is a great take on a classic idea, made amid an era of regal design. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection of top quality Scottish pebble jewelry.

To the Victorians, an anchor was a symbol of hope and steadfastness. Husbands would go off to sea as wives stood waving goodbye in the salty air of the harbor; they wore anchor motifs as a sentiment that they would see each other again. They would trust this idea and would hold enduring love, despite distance and danger. The anchor was also mentioned in a beautiful bible verse, Hebrews 6:19, “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and secure, and which enters into that within the veil.” This was likely the origination of the symbol, but of course, an anchor is logically a resource for ensuring safety, for holding steady, and for sound reliance.
This fantastic Anchor brooch has the added Victorian sentiment of the ivy leaf, a symbol of love, used as ‘I cling to thee’. The sterling silver anchor has pink and yellow gold washed leaves and tips for added visual interest. This wonderful piece measures 43.5 mm north to south and 22.7 mm across at the widest point, it weighs 2.7 grams. We’d be happy to convert this lovely brooch to a pendant upon request. The pin is marked to the reverse with the hallmarks showing that it was made in Birmingham, England in 1890, it also has a makers mark.
Sail away with this fantastic sea-themed anchor jewel. No need to be by the water to wear it, anywhere with a glass of wine and a sunset will do.

When Queen Victoria's Royal Court followed her to Scotland and Barlmoral Castle, the demand for Scottish jewelry in all forms flourished. The witches heart, with a tail that almost always twists to the right, had become a popular and very romantic motif in Scotland in the 17th century. Made to ward off witches and evil spirits, it was sold from small stalls or locked booths and is sometimes also called a 'Luckenbooth'. By the time this wonderful brooch was made during the Victorian era, these brooches were being given as betrothal pieces, often shown with the hearts intertwined, the message was that the receiver had ‘bewitched’ the giver!
This wonderful brooch was hand crafted in about 1880, it is beautifully detailed with blue, white, red and green enamel to the front. This piece is unmarked but tests as sterling silver. It was likely made in England. The brooch measures 40.3 mm north to south and 29.9 mm across and weighs 9.8 grams.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June of 1914 was the trigger that launched the Great War of 1914-1918, which we now call World War I. The English tried to stay out of the war, but on August 4th the Germans came through Belgium and attacked France and England could no longer ignore the treat, within days they were officially at war. English patriotism was high during war time and this ‘Bully’ bulldog holding a Union Jack in his mouth was just one symbol of this national feeling.
This wonderful brooch was hand crafted in sterling silver in 1914. It is beautifully rendered with great attention to detail, the bright enameled colors of the British flag really pop! This wonderful piece is marked to the reverse with the word ‘silver’ and a Registration number, ‘REGd 644039’, indicating the date of origin. The doggie measures 21.4 mm north to south and 35.2 mm across and weighs 3.8 grams.

In Scotland, the thistle is the national symbol, it stands for pain, protection, and pride. There is a legend that is based in the 13th century in which the Norse King’s soldiers invade a Scottish Coastal town. This Viking King plotted to sneak slyly in on the Scottish Clansmen and Highlanders, while they slept. They chose to go barefoot. One of the soldiers stepped on a native thistle and cried out in pain. His scream was so loud it woke the Scots and thus the battle began prematurely, leaving the Scots victorious. How factual this myth is, is up to interpretation; but around this time period, the thistle became a symbol of national pride in Scotland.
This wonderful Scottish brooch is set with an array of richly colored agates in shades of reds, yellows, oranges and grays which form a traditional Garter motif. The center of the brooch features a detailed silver thistle with one Amethyst and two Citrine faceted thistle flowers. This early example of Scottish jewelry was probably made around 1850-1860 and it has a small clip at the top, probably meant to hold a safety chain originally, it can now be used to hang this large brooch on a sturdy chain. The back of this piece is engraved with the initials EW in curvy script. There is a small repair to the back where a new ‘C’ clasp was put on. The brooch measures 60.3 mm north to south and 51 mm across and it weighs 31.4 grams. There are no hallmarks and we’ve tested it as sterling silver.
When the Castle at Balmoral was completed in 1856, the entourage of the Royal family flocked to Scotland. They dressed themselves in tartans and plaids, pinned with brooches set with agates, amethysts and citrines, brooches like this magnificent beauty.

Curiouser and curiouser. Reminiscent of a demon with its haunting red eyes, but also suggestive of a soothsayer with its long beard and mysterious existence. It’s rings like this that capture my imagination and make me wonder the most wondrous of things. I found this interesting bauble in Amsterdam a few weeks ago. I had just polished off a toffee souffle at Vinkeles and was going for a twilight stroll when a small garden level storefront caught my eye. It didn’t take me long until I had a handful of goodies, including this intriguing charmer.
This amazing gold ring was handcrafted around 1900. It’s a creative piece, with demons as the shoulders with red ruby eyes and a sparkling cluster of diamonds at the center. This ring consists of 16 old European cut diamonds, totaling an approximate weight of 1.275 carats. The center diamond measures 5 x 5 x 3.5 mm, weighing approximately .60 carats. The ring face measures 10.5 mm north to south and 23.7 mm across, and 5 mm off the finger. The band width narrows to 3.3 mm at the back of the band. This ring is a size 8 and it weighs 8.2 grams. It bears no marks and has been acid tested.
Wear a little mystery on your finger! I love this fabulous little bauble and I just know you will, too.

This antique silver bird brooch was handcrafted in 1917 in Europe. Across the open-winged bird is a banner that reads, “Ypres”, a city in Belgium known for the Battle of Ypres – a series of fights during World War I between Germany and the Allied Forces. This brooch measures 60 mm across and 17.3 mm north to south. It has been acid tested and weighs 2.7 grams.
There were hundreds of thousands of casualties in the five engagements of the Battle of Ypres, which began in 1914 and ended in 1918. It was a significant battleground, and remembering it meant commemorating a plethora of multi-nationals that were involved – including but not limited to Australians, Belgians, Canadians, Indians, Africans, and New Zealanders. There were controversial moves in the battles that have gone down in history as potentially improper, which is saying a lot as far as warfare goes. Of course, out of tragedy, there is always a silver lining. Subsequently, the town and surrounding areas were completely rebuilt and brought into the modern era with new technologies and architecture.
What better way to remember something so life altering than a badge of honor?

I’m always ravenous for pieces of art that can be worn and shown off. And pieces like these, with endless charm and flattery, are by far my favorite. There’s a sweetness with this piece that stems from the jeweler’s love for his craft. There’s tradition with this piece, illuminated from the idea of nature. There’s a fashion with this piece, found in the ratios of gold, crystal, and paint, which give a sense of perfect artistic balance.
This antique Victorian gold Essex crystal brooch was handcrafted in England around 1880. It features a detailed motif of a horse and bridle, set in 15 karat gold. It’s a round pin that measures 22.4 mm in diameter and weighs 8.4 grams. It bears the hallmark, “V” and a maker’s mark. This brooch has been acid tested.
This type of reverse cut and painted rock crystal is commonly called an Essex Crystal. It’s made by taking a smooth round rock crystal, and cabochon cutting it, then deeply reverse-carving it. The stone is then hand-painted from the back. It’s a tedious process that takes many man hours. Of course, every minute of work on this piece was absolutely worth it!

It was pinned in the center of her shirt collar, giving the white blouse a touch of shining silver. Her hair was parted down the center, it was long and sandy blonde. She sipped her coffee from a glass mug at a small café somewhere in central London, with red bistro chairs and wooden tables. She was reading a book of French poetry, as a sophisticated woman does. Passersby did double takes before walking on, as she looked like a celebrity hiding in plain sight.

The snow dripped from the sky as she made her way through the city. She bundled up in her black pea coat and green scarf, secured together with an agate brooch that sat off to the side on her shoulder. It looked regal there, like it belonged. Snowflakes landed on her nose and she tried to wiggle them off, laughing at how ridiculous it felt. She was almost home, close to warmth, but couldn’t help a smile as she saw the white tops of houses and snow-lined windowsills.

The idea of plait work, intricately woven lines, in knot design began in Italy and southern Gaul, which spread to Ireland by the 7th Century AD. These knot designs can be traced back to the 3rd Century BC, where they were used on Ancient Roman floor mosaics. Historians believe that there is likely little meaning to them at all. But with time and culture, symbolism has been placed. These designs are made up of lines without a beginning or an end, representing eternity and typically surrounded around the subjects of love, friendship, loyalty, and unbreakable barriers.
This antique Irish blue enamel Celtic brooch pin was handcrafted around 1850. It was made in silver, most likely in Ireland. It measures 63.4 mm in circumference. There are no marks and it has been acid tested. This round brooch features three distinct knot designs surrounded by brilliant blue enamel. I believe it may have originally been set in the center with a large cairngorm. This heavy brooch weighs 50.2 grams, it would be excellent to hold a plaid, or on a suit jacket.
The influence of Christianity seeped into the Celtic civilization around 450 AD, after the use of spirals, step patterns and key patterns had been well-established within the culture. Of course, these motifs found their way into early Christian manuscripts, such as the Book of Kells, from 800 AD, which also bore depictions of plants, animals, and people.

Cupid’s golden arrow would shoot true love through the air to have it pierce an unsuspecting heart. His arrow of lead, however, would spread something else, something sinister; it would make a heart runaway. The symbol of the arrow carries a sentiment of romance and lust, of chance and risk; for it glitters, but it wounds. To the Victorians, an arrow could also refer to mortality, as at its core, an arrow is a weapon.
This bold antique Victorian silver and carnelian arrow brooch was handcrafted in Scotland, around 1880. The arrowhead and fletching feature swirling silver engravings. The shaft is made of a deep orange colored carnelian, measuring 42.2 mm in length. The overall measurements of the piece are 112.2 x 33.5 mm. It weighs 12.9 grams. This brooch is unmarked and has been acid tested.
To hold your scarf in place, or to decorate a blazer, this Victorian arrow is sure to function as fashion, and necessity.

He needed a remedy to save him from the same old, same old. He’d been searching for it for a while. He wanted something simple, something refreshing, something that wouldn’t give him déjà vu. They came to him in the way all his favorite possessions find him-from a mile away and a glint from the sun. He saw them and thought to himself, ‘Everything old is new again, isn’t it?’.

The gents have been asking for cufflinks, and since I’m an ‘ask and ye shall receive’ kind of girl, I scoured the markets of London on my last trip over to find some that would fit the bill. You said you wanted them on the larger side, you said you wanted them to be noticed, you said Vintage was best. So of course this pair just had to come back over the pond with me!
These masculine and wonderful cufflinks are hand-crafted in sterling silver and set with cabochon cut moss agates. The agates display a wonderful color range, from rusty brown to mossy green which displays the moss pattern that gives this fabulous agate its name. They have lozenge backs which are marked ‘Silver,’ they are stylish and will keep them well in place. These are unmarked but they seem very Art Deco in style. I suspect they date to about 1920-1930, they weigh 16.8 grams together.
So, if it’s cufflinks you want, it's cufflinks you shall have!

True story: Whenever I’m shopping in England, I often get accused of picking out all the pieces that my vendors have just purchased. “How do you always know which pieces I just bought!!??”. This ring was one of those, in fact I took it right off the finger of my friend, she said it was good that I bought it before she got too attached!
This stunning and large ring was most certainly made for a man, but the right woman could certainly pull it off. Hand crafted in about 1880, this Austro-Hungarian beauty is set with a large oval of rich green bloodstone flecked with red. The stone measures 19 x 15.8 mm and is closed at the back. The ring face measures 27 mm north to south and 24.5 mm across, it sits 6.2 mm off the finger and narrows to 3.5 mm at the back of the band. This ring is marked with a makers mark and hallmark, it has been acid tested to verify the gold content at 14 karat and weighs 12.6 grams. This very handsome ring is a size 12 US and could be resized somewhat to suit.
I offer a 3 or 4 payment layaway on most items purchased for full retail price, please inquire if you are interested in setting up a layaway. Items ship when payment is complete and items purchased or payments made on layaway are eligible for store credit only.

If you love antiques, and you're in London, there is only one place that you absolutely cannot miss, it's called Gray's Antique Centre and it houses hundreds of dealers selling everything from ancient artifacts to art deco gems. Gray's can be found hiding just off of Oxford Street in a lovely terra-cotta wedge of a building in the heart of London's West End (speaking of west ends, the building was built in the 19th century by John Bolding and Son as a toilet factory - hence the nickname 'John' for toilet). Give yourself some time because Gray's has actually spread out over the years and now sprawls over two floors of exquisite dealers. It's enough to make even the most novice antique collector as giddy as a schoolgirl!
I found this ring at Gray's on a Thursday morning. Hand crafted in 15 karat gold, this highly stylized signet ring is set with a smooth, un-carved oval of Onyx. The shoulders of this ring are beautifully adorned with a scroll and arrow motif. This ring is fully hallmarked with the marks for having been made in Birmingham, England in 1874 of 15 karat gold, it also has the makers mark of ‘C.G’. The ring is a size 8 US and weighs 7 grams. The onyx measures 13.4 mm north to south and 10.1 mm across, the overall face of the ring is 15.3 mm north to south and 15.3 mm across, it sits 4.2 mm off the finger and narrows to 4.6 mm at the back of the band.
This wonderful ring is very crisp and super stylish, perfect for a woman or man.

In real life, the Ostrich is an animal which stands over 9 feet tall and can run at a maximum speed of up to 45 miles per hour, fast enough to chase a cheetah. In heraldry, the image of an Ostrich is used as a symbol of faith and contemplation. For centuries the Ostrich was always depicted with a metal object in its mouth, usually a horseshoe or a key. It was thought that Ostriches could eat these metal objects. The family Chamberlin features an ostrich like this one with a key in its beak standing atop a coronet.
This handcrafted 18 karat gold ring features a large oval of deep green bloodstone flecked with bright red. The stone is carved with a fantastic image of an ostrich holding a key and is set into a subtly gorgeous ring with a rosy gold hue. This large intaglio measures 19 mm north to south and 12.3 mm across, the overall face of the ring is 20.8 x 11.6 mm and sits 4.7 mm of the finger. This ring is a size 8.25 and is unmarked, so we’ve carefully acid tested it to verify the content. This circa 1870-80 ring weighs 9.8 grams. Most likely it was made in England which is where I found it.
I have to wonder if perhaps this wasn’t the ring of one Peter Redpath who lived from 1821-1894. Redpath was a Canadian businessman and philanthropist who was of Scottish descent. He migrated to England in 1880. His personal crest was identical to this carving.

It only took a split second for me to decide that this ring was for me when the dealer pulled it out of her display and placed it in my hand. There is nothing like the feel of 18 karat gold, it has such a luxurious weight that it always makes me think I've landed in Middle Earth. It warms instantly to the touch and has a comfort level that other metals simply cannot match.
This hand carved 18 karat gold ring is engraved with a Ivy leaf motif, often used by the English as symbolic of the romantic phrase 'I cling to thee', the lovely carving is still quite crisp. The ring is fully hallmarked as having been made in Birmingham, England in 1899, it is 8 mm wide, weighs 6.8 grams and is a size 7.5 US.
A spectacular and sentimental ring that would make a fantastic wedding band!

The serpent has had a place in mythology since man has been man. Chased from the Garden of Eden, sprouting from the head of a Gorgon, a dual symbol of good and evil, of medicine and poison, of fertility and revenge. Perhaps the duality of our own human nature has led every culture throughout humankind to both revere and revile them. To the Egyptians they were a symbol of royalty, to the Hindi a sign of passion, to the Romans they represented undying love. When Prince Albert proposed to Queen Victoria, it was at the height of a fashion revival for all things ancient and he presented her with a ring composed of two intertwined snakes to symbolize their unity and eternal love. Thus began both the engagement ring and the Victorian love affair with the serpent.
This fantastic double snake ring was made in England in about 1890. It is set with a bright and romantic red ruby and a sparkling old European cut diamond. This rings hallmarks are a little too rubbed to make out fully, but I can see that it was made in Chester, England of 18 karat gold. This ring measures 9 mm north to south and the face is 14.8 mm across, it’s 4.2 mm high and narrows to 3 mm at the back of the band. This ring is a size 7.5 and weighs 4 grams.

I have long fingers and long fingers need rings of substance. When I saw this beauty sparkling in the sunlight of my friend and supplier’s kitchen, I popped it on and didn’t take it off again for a week. It’s unusual looking for a Victorian ring and I suspect that it was originally made for a gentleman, but it looks equally brilliant on my long fingered lady-hands!
This fully hallmarked ring was made in London, England in 1884. It looks like a large ‘X’, but I actually think it was created as a love knot ring and it’s set with 3 old European cut diamonds in a gypsy style. The diamonds add up to about .35 carats and the ring is crafted in 18 karat buttery yellow gold, and is marked ’18’ for the gold content. This ring measure 11.5 mm north to south and sits super flush, only 2 mm off the finger, it narrows to 8.2 mm at the back of the band and so will be a slightly snugger fit than a ring with a thin band, it’s a size 9 and weighs 7.3 grams.

She remembers when she first fell in love. It was as though something pierced her heart, and she placed her hand to her chest. Her stomach fluttered and her cheeks were touched with pink. He was a boy in her class that helped carry her books. His eyes were dark, like chocolate truffles. He had four freckles on his nose. His hair was sandy, windblown, and wavy. He walked her home every day that year, telling her jokes just to make her smile. She was 11 and he was 12. He was the boy next door. 10 years later he was the boy with the ring on his finger, making her coffee in the morning, still telling jokes because her smile made his heart skip a beat, and his stomach flutter, and his cheeks turn pink. This piece reminds her of that feeling, as if Cupid’s Arrow struck her heart.
This sterling silver arrow brooch was handcrafted in Scotland around 1880. It is a striking piece that measures 70.3 x 25.8 mm and weighs 8.3 grams. The back contains a c-clasp to fit snugly on your favorite top! Red and gray granite decorate this arrow and shield brooch. It has been acid tested.
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were enthralled with Scotland since they first began to visit during the 1840s. In 1852, the couple purchased Balmoral Castle to reside in during summers. Queen Victoria owned the estate until her death in 1901. During that time, the demand for Scottish jewelry was high. Between the colorful pebble design made with native Scottish stones and the use of silver, this piece was very clearly made during this era of heavy Scottish inspiration. It was a time where traditional Scottish jewelry mixed with Victorian styles, inspiring themes such as Celtic knots, swords, kilts, thistles, plaid pins, and flowers.
This piece reminds me of Cupid’s arrow, helping jewelry loving souls find their next brooch!

After another long trip overseas, training soldiers to fight for freedom, and eating cold stale food for far too long, he came home. His daughter came out of their house to greet him, with her pony-tail flying as she ran into his familiar arms. His loving wife walked after her, with a smile of comfort and joy upon her perfect face. He kissed her like he meant it, in the English rain, beneath a gray and misty sky. With this ring, he kept a symbol that, to him, meant more than a sign of heroism and audacity. It meant moments like these, the reason for leaving, to protect the ones he loved, and those who loved him right back.
This handsome antique gold shield ring was handcrafted in Chester, England, in 1905. It features a shield shaped face with regal designed shoulders. I could have worn it on the pinky, like a gentleman does. I could have shaken hands and shown it off, tilting it toward the light just so. I could have slipped it onto a chain and left it hang there for the world to see so obviously.
“Victoria, what’s on your forefinger?”
“Bloodstone, my dear.”
“You sure know how to dress for an occasion.”
“I certainly like to think so.” I let the ring sit there, on the forefinger resting on my hip. It wasn’t asking for attention but somehow it was getting it anyway. Honestly, I wasn’t about to argue, fate is as fate does.
This Victorian bloodstone signet ring was handcrafted in England around 1890. It’s an antique piece with an oval flat-cut bloodstone at the center, bezel set in 18 karat gold. It bears the crown mark for England and the gold purity mark, “18”. The maker’s mark reads, “S.B&S”.

We were at Tower Restaurant, enjoying the dark Belgian chocolate terrine on a terrace with a remarkable view of the city, when I reached for my Negroni. My finger caught a glint of the fading pink sunlight.
“I hide you in here, you know?” I asked as I saw his eyes dart towards it.
“Do you now?” he asked back, with a laugh in his eye.
“I do.” I said sincerely and returned the silent chuckle.
I took a sip, listening to the sounds of the Royal Mile, and drinking in the company I’d chosen to keep. We laughed long after the sun had evanesced.

It was made in 9 karat gold and features a lion rampant intaglio with a hidden locket that tucks inside the ring face. The initials, “A.F.” can be found on the front, right below the lion. The salt in the air from the Thames gave me goosebumps. I felt the thickness of humidity as I sat at Battersea Park beneath a strawberry tree. I was in the company of clever friends and the last of the morning dew.
“Ever consider something simpler to wear so early in the day, Victoria?”
“I never consider things before breakfast, my dear.”
“Then how did you end up in gold and pearls?”
“Instinct my darling, instinct.”

There is a Christian legend that takes place in the 3rd century in a town called Silene, in Libya. A young princess was waiting alone, outside of town, to be sacrificed to a dragon. This dragon was a ferocious creature covered in green scales and threatening to destroy the town if they didn’t deliver food in the form of humans and sheep. St. George happened to be riding along on his horse that day and spotted the princess. He asked her what she was doing all by herself. As the princess explained her predicament, she told him to run away before the dragon appeared, otherwise they would both be eaten. St. George refused, and as the dragon came into view, he wounded the beast in the name of Jesus Christ. The two of them drug the meek dragon into the town and the residents looked on in curiosity and fear. In the name of God, St. George took his sword and killed the beast. The townspeople, thankful and impressed, were then baptized in the name of God. The King was so grateful he set up a church called Our Lady and Saint George, and within the church sprung up a fountain of water that miraculously healed the sick.
This Victorian silver ring was handcrafted in England around 1890. It features the image of St. George heroically slaying the dragon. Most of what we know of St. George is myth, although he is the Patron Saint of England. His legend embodies the ideas of honor and gallantry that many Brits hold dear.

I’ve always had a soft spot for buckle rings, especially when winking gypsy-set diamonds are involved. The buckle was a common motif in Victorian jewelry as it symbolized eternity. It was popularized by Queen Victoria, as so much fashion of the time was, and the design carried over into the Edwardian Era. When buckle-themed jewelry was given to another, it represented the romantic ideals of unending love and strength. The idea of one end being threaded into the other, creating a never-ending circle, was a powerful justification of its meaning. Doesn’t that just send chills up your spine and bring goosebumps to your arms?
This antique gold buckle ring was handcrafted in England around 1890. It features two old European cut diamonds, weighing an approximate total of .17 carats. The ring face measures 7.5 mm in height and 1.2 mm in depth. This ring bears the gold purity mark, “18” and the maker’s mark, “G.S”. It weighs 7.1 grams and is a size 8.25.
The buckle motif dates to the sixteenth century when it was often called a ‘garter’. The buckle signifies the unbreakable strength of loyal virtue and memory forever. Sometimes, it’s seen as a motif on memorial jewelry.

I took this ring apart under the allusion I’d be able to put it back together again with the utmost of ease. Unfortunately, for me and my ego, it took two other people to figure out how to place the six bands back together. Needless to say, this challenging ring’s beauty made up for the surprise challenge and I wore it for the rest of the week. Of course, the celebratory champagne after figuring out this puzzle, helped. This ring is stunning when in place, a circle of six rings, woven together in unity, like a masterpiece made for the finger.
This Edwardian gold puzzle ring was handcrafted around 1910 in England. It’s a size 11 and weighs 11.0 grams. It’s reminiscent of a love-knot ring and measures 13 x 18 x 4 mm off the finger. The band width is 6 mm at the back. It bears the gold purity mark, “18K”.
Not much is known about the history of these puzzle rings. It’s believed that it was developed as an elaborate version of the gimmel ring, which grew to popularity in the 1600’s. A gimmel ring consists of two interlocking bands. The bride would wear one hoop, and the groom the other, upon their engagement. On the wedding day, the bands would join together as one as a symbol of eternal love.

I like a man who knows how to wear an accessory. I appreciate a guy who can rock a pair of cufflinks, a tie clip, and a good pair of polished shoes. It shows care, it shows character, its shows chivalry. I like a man who chooses a pocket watch and a Georgian fob over a wrist watch, any day. I like a man who recognizes the handsomeness in signet rings, especially this one right here.
This antique signet heart ring was handcrafted in Birmingham, England in 1918. It was made in 18 karat gold and weighs 6.8 grams. A snake ring should be a part of your daily jewelry wardrobe. Which one and where you wear it? Well, that is, of course, up to you. Far be it for me to dictate how you wear your snake (or two, or three), I’m just saying that I think you should. In case you were wondering, I wear mine on my thumb, I don’t feel fully dressed if I leave the house without it, I suspect it won’t take long for you to feel the exact same way.
This double snake is a true Gentleman’s ring. To start with, it’s a manly size 10.5 and a weighty 12 grams of 18 karat gold. It’s got a subtle appeal, makes people come in a little closer to get a good look. Two snakes are wrapped around each other for all of time, one is set with glittering diamond eyes and the other with green demantoid garnets. This ring measures 14 mm north to south at the front and narrows to 10 mm at the back of the band. It is both inscribed and fully hallmarked. Made in Birmingham, England in 1870, the inscription reads “E. H. to M. W. Magar Novbr 8th 1870”, it also has a makers mark of ‘W.R’.
I think there’s a power that comes with wearing a snake ring, a sense of being in command, but I guess you’ll just have to try and see if you agree.

She’s not afraid to use it when she’s replacing the brake rod on her Switchback motorcycle for a cross-country road trip. It works great during her early morning surf. It fits perfectly late into the night as she closes business deals over the phone. Yeah, she’s one of those girls, the go-getter who won’t have anything hold her back. Those flashy stones are too delicate, too loud, too much. But this ring? Well let’s just say she’ll never fear the subtle brag.
