Victorian Sardonyx Memorial Ring 18k Gold In Memory Of

$ 1,400.00

Here’s a little tip for you from a buyer of old jewels. English hallmarks have gotten smaller over time. The assay marks that were used even fifty years ago were larger than they are now, and the hallmarks used a hundred years ago were bigger still. So, when I’m shopping for jewels in the markets of London, I always get a little thrill when I look at a piece of jewelry and see large hallmarks, because I know that it will have an early date!

This ring has just those kinds of big hallmarks, a big crown and queen to tell us it’s English, a big Anchor that tells us it was made in Birmingham, England’s jewelry making center in Victorian times and the letter N, which is the date code for the year 1862. It also has the mark ’18’ for 18 karat gold and a makers mark of ‘C.G.’. This hand crafted beauty is a fantastic memorial ring with an unusual shape, it is set with a smooth oval of sardonyx and the stone is surrounded by a ribbon of enamel in black that contains the phrase ‘In Memory Of’. This beautiful and very wearable ring is a size 8 and weighs 4.6 grams. The face of the ring measures 12.5 mm from north to south and 16.4 mm across, it sits 3.5 mm off the finger and narrows to 2.9 mm at the back of the band.
