The brooch is both ancient and modern, a design reaching back to early Celtic forms, reborn through the romantic eye of the Arts and Crafts movement. Alexander Ritchie, working on the remote Scottish isle of Iona, created jewelry that honored both his Celtic heritage and the simplicity of handcraft. This bold penannular form with its coiled rose motifs, carries the unmistakable imprint of his workshop; it's quiet, sculptural, timeless.
Made in 1908, this brooch is finely crafted in sterling silver and fully hallmarked. It bears a maker's mark "CS*FS", for Cornelius Saunders & Francis Shepherd, the lion passant, Chester assay mark, "H" for 1908, "IONA", and "AR" for Alexander Ritchie himself. The brooch measures 51 mm tall by 54.5 mm wide and 4.3 mm thick and weighs 25.6 grams.
Ritchie’s Iona pieces were never about mass production; they were made for those who appreciated artistry, heritage, and quiet strength.
