Some jewels feel as though they’ve flown straight out of a myth. This late-19th-century French griffin with wings outstretched and claws poised mid-stride, looks as if it has just lifted itself from the illuminated margins of a medieval manuscript and landed, shimmering, in the palm of your hand. It carries a single rose-cut diamond that glints with an unmistakable old-world sparkle. There’s a sense of movement, of guardianship, of a creature meant to protect the wearer just as it once protected treasure.
Handcrafted in France in about 1890, this brooch is made in 18 karat gold and bears the French eagle’s head hallmark. It carries a rose-cut diamond of approximately 2.4 mm set in it beak, bright, charming, and perfectly suited to the creature’s duty to protect. The brooch measures 22.6 mm north to south, 23.2 mm across, and 6.5 mm deep, and weighs 3.26 grams.
Wear it at the collar, on a lapel, or pinned to a favorite coat, and let it accompany you like a small talisman, a golden mythic guardian with a story still unfolding.
