Sarah Ricketts was 63 years old when she died on September 10, 1870. Someone who loved her walked into a Birmingham jeweler and commissioned a ring that would keep her name close long after she was gone. Glossy black enamel encircled the finger with the words “IN MEMORY OF,” while a garnet the color of dark red wine marked its center. Her name and the date of her death were engraved inside, hidden against the skin, where only the person wearing it would know they were there. Sarah has been gone for more than 150 years, and we know almost nothing about her life, but someone loved her enough to make certain she would not be forgotten.
Handcrafted in Birmingham in 1869 to 1870, this remarkable Victorian mourning ring is fashioned in 18 karat gold with broad, gently shaped panels of glossy black enamel and the words “IN MEMORY OF” picked out in gold around the band. Delicately engraved borders soften the strong geometry, while a rectangular closed back garnet measuring 4 by 7 millimeters glows at the center. Inside is engraved, “Sarah Ricketts died Sepr 10th 1870, Aged 63.” The ring is fully hallmarked with the crown and “18” for 18 karat gold, the Birmingham anchor, the date letter “U” for 1869 to 1870 and the maker’s mark “S.B.” The band measures 7.6 millimeters wide and approximately 1.3 millimeters deep. This ring is a US size 11 and weighs 6.7 grams.
Someone promised to remember Sarah. A century and a half later, we still do.
