She wore it close to her heart, and inside were the two faces she loved best. By 1890, photographs had become precious little objects in their own right, exchanged between sweethearts and tucked into lockets by wives, mothers and daughters. Hers was particularly beautiful, crowned with curling gold scrolls and set with a garnet the color of red wine, surrounded by six tiny pearls. She could open it when she missed them, but no one else needed to know whose faces were hidden inside. To everyone passing on the street, it was simply a beautiful gold locket. The real treasure belonged only to her.
Handcrafted around 1890, this richly detailed Victorian locket is 9 karat gold back and front, an antique construction in which sheets of gold form the visible front and back over an inner metal structure. A deep red, closed back garnet measuring 2.5 millimeters sits within a six pointed starburst, encircled by six creamy seed pearls measuring approximately 1.5 millimeters each. The softly domed oval case is edged with a geometric border and crowned with wonderfully elaborate scrolling and foliate goldwork. The locket opens to hold two photographs or small keepsakes and is hallmarked “9CT,” “BKS & FTS” and with the maker’s mark “A&C.” It measures 50 millimeters from top to bottom including the bail, 30 millimeters across and 9.5 millimeters deep, and weighs 9.8 grams. The right side interior cover and its metal frame insert are missing, as shown in the photographs. The chain shown is not included.
