He gave her his heart tied with a bow. It was the sort of little love token that needed no grand explanation, a golden heart for affection, a ribbon bow for the bond between them, and a secret compartment inside for the face she wanted closest to her own. She wore it at her throat, where the engraved gold caught the light and the tiny bow made it look almost like a beautifully wrapped present. Whatever photograph or keepsake she once tucked inside is gone, but the message he gave her with it is just as easy to read today.

Dating to around 1900, this charming Victorian heart locket has a softly rounded form topped with a sculptural ribbon bow. Fine wavy engraving covers the front, divided by narrow polished bands that flash beautifully against the textured gold, while the reverse is smooth and polished. The locket measures 31 millimeters from top to bottom including the bow and hanging loop, 20.2 millimeters across and 7.3 millimeters deep, and weighs 2.94 grams. It is hallmarked “9CT” and “BACK & FRONT,” a traditional British construction in which the visible front and back plates are 9 karat gold rather than the entire locket being solid gold. It opens at the side to reveal space for a treasured photograph or tiny keepsake.

A heart, tied with a bow. What more really needs to be said?
