She wore a garden at her throat. Silver leaves curled upward among little flowers touched with warm rose and yellow gold, and above them a butterfly hovered as though it had just alighted there. Inside she kept the things that mattered more than jewels, two beloved faces, a lock of hair, a tiny remembrance of someone she wanted always near. In the Victorian language of sentiment, flowers spoke of affection and butterflies of transformation, and together they turned this locket into a miniature garden of memory, one she could carry with her wherever she went.
Created in Birmingham in 1880, this beautiful Victorian sterling silver locket is decorated with delicate hand engraved stems and foliage, applied embossed flowers in warm rose and yellow gold tones and a wonderfully detailed butterfly floating above them. It measures 54.5 millimeters from top to bottom including the bail, 32.3 millimeters across and 8.7 millimeters deep, and weighs 17.35 grams. It is fully hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver, the Birmingham anchor, the date letter “f” for 1880 and the maker’s mark “G.W.D.” The locket opens to reveal two generously sized compartments, both retaining their original frames and blue liners, ready for photographs, locks of hair or other small keepsakes.
Nearly 150 years later, the flowers never faded and the butterfly never flew away.
