There’s a quiet authority to this small object, as though it once belonged to someone who moved through rooms where decisions were made, fortunes discussed, alliances sealed. Its compact weight feels purposeful, like a secret carried close. The bloodstone intaglio bears a Latin motto ‘Fax Mentis Incendium Glorie’ translates from Latin as ‘The Flame of (or passion for) Glory is the Flame of the Mind’. It shows a giant torch and the inscription is carved into a garter around the edge.
Handcrafted in about 1850, this Victorian fob is rendered in rich 15 karat gold, its architectural form deeply chased with bold floral scrolls. The base holds a bloodstone intaglio measuring 9.6 mm, engraved and encircled with a Latin inscription. The overall dimensions are 24 mm tall by 11.5 mm wide and deep, and it weighs 5 grams. It is unmarked but professionally tested. Please note the chain shown is just for display and is not included with this beautiful fob.
There is always a certain romance to pieces like this: once practical, now purely beautiful, a whisper from another century, waiting to be carried forward.
