An anchor has always meant more than the sea. It speaks of steadfastness, hope, and the person that holds us firm. Here, it is beautifully cut into rich orange-red carnelian, set beneath an unusually elegant openwork handle with scrolling, almost architectural lines. It is a wonderfully handsome Georgian seal, substantial enough to feel important and remarkably wearable as a pendant today.

Handcrafted in England in about 1820, this Georgian seal fob is made in 15 karat gold and set with an oval carnelian intaglio carved with an anchor within a shield, surmounted by drapery and a bow. The carnelian measures 21 millimeters by 17.5 millimeters. The fob measures 30.3 millimeters high by 24.7 millimeters across by 20.3 millimeters deep and weighs 8.8 grams. It bears no hallmarks and has been acid tested as 15 karat gold. The chain shown is not included.

Two centuries ago it sealed a letter; today it makes an extraordinary pendant. And there is something rather lovely about wearing an anchor close to your heart.
