It’s one of those things that includes a second glance. It’s addictive, in good way. It goes great with other addictive things; like good wine, stilettos, and chocolate that melts in your mouth. It looks like fire on your finger, and yet you won’t get burned.
This antique Edwardian opal and gold ring was handcrafted in Chester, England in 1905. This vibrant band holds five precious opals on the ring face, with each gem oval and cabochon cut and gradating in size down the shoulders. The largest opal measures 5.2 x 4 x 2.3 mm. This ring is a size 6.5 and weighs 3.0 grams. The ring face measures 7.7 x 8.2 x 4.4 mm off the finger with a band width of 2.6 mm. This piece is fully hallmarked and bears the crown mark for England, the gold purity mark, “18”, the wheat sheaves mark for Chester, and the letter date, “g”.
Opals are the birthstone of October but should be worn year-round, I mean, the Romans once believed that opals were the most powerful stone of them all.

He was walking through the shops, searching for something that looked like her. In a small storefront, at garden level, he spotted a stone like no other he’d seen. A hidden gem, a needle in a haystack, that four-leaf clover in a field of daisies. It looked like a blanket of snow over a mountain, each snowflake with its own colorful fire burning, lighting up beneath the sun. It looked like a sunset in Malibu, over the ocean in the West, with rainbow skies and salty air. It looked like her, beautiful at every angle, timeless and everything he was searching for.

I’m always on the lookout for marvelous opal rings, and I often come across 3 and 5 stone varieties in the very typical English Victorian fashion, but I have to admit that when I saw this particular ring my jaw just about hit the floor. Once I had lifted said jaw and tucked it back neatly into place, I had no choice but to slip this large and luscious beauty onto my finger and bring it home with me. This is, without a doubt, the biggest, boldest and most fabulous example of a 3 stone ring I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Far, oh so very far, from typical.
Hand crafted in 18 karat gold around the turn of the (last) century, this circa 1900 ring is graced with three voluptuous opals with fantastic play of color in flashes of blue, green, orange, red and yellow. The center stone is an approximately 1.7 carat round cabochon gem and the two side opals are cabochon egg shapes that add up to another 1.2 carats in bright opal gems. Interspersed between the opals are 5-7 point old European cut diamonds for added sparkle and flash, these add up to about .35 carats total weight. This ring is a size 9 and while it could be re-sized a little bit, it’s scale dictates that it be worn on a finger of about this size. The ring measures 9.8 mm from north to south and 26.3 mm from east to west and sits 6.4 mm off the finger, it narrows to 1.7 mm at the back of the band. This ring has no marks but has been acid tested to verify it’s content at 18 karat gold.
This stunning ring was no doubt worn by important lady of the day, I have yet to meet its equal.

We were at a drive-in movie theatre on a thick summer night, the stars were out, the moon was waning. My Little Chicadee played on the silver screen, his arm was draped over my shoulder.
That’s quite the ring you have there, Victoria.
Oh this? A handsome man gave it to me.
He has good taste.
He gets it from me.
He was concerned it might be too conventional for you. But, who says conventional has to be boring?
I held up my hand so the light from the projector could catch the opals just right. I thanked him for my ring, admiring the glimmer, right before stealing the rest of the salty popcorn.
This antique opal ring was handcrafted in Chester, England in 1906. It’s an Edwardian piece, made in 18 karat gold with five round cabochon cut opals across the ring face. The largest opal can be found at the center, it measures 6 x 5.4 x 2.6 mm. This ring is a size 8 and it weighs 3.7 grams. The ring face measures 8.6 mm north to south and 20.1 mm across. It sits 5 mm off the finger and the band width is 2.1 mm at the back. It bears the date letter mark, “f”, the gold purity mark, “18”, and the assay mark for Chester.
The opal is the most shimmering of stones, in my professional opinion. They’re every color of the rainbow, and I swear they invent colors we’ve never seen before.

She’s not interested in new and modern. She wants vintage or even better, antique. She wants history. Her bookshelves hold the classics – Austin and Shelly. Her car is from the 60’s. Her walk is from her mother and her confidence is from her father. And her rings from generations past.
Handcrafted around 1900 in 18 karat gold, this is a classic antique Victorian ring. It was made with five luminescent, graduated opals, the largest measuring 6.9 x 5.1 x 3.1 mm. Each of the eight rose cut diamonds are patterned around the opals, giving it glint and glimmer from every angle. It is a size 6.5 and weighs 5.2 grams. The face sits 5.5 mm off the finger. This piece is unmarked and has been acid tested.

There are a lot of moments. Some of them have cold rain that won’t let up. Some of them are too hot, sticky, and endless. But then there are those that are just right – where the air is as soft as washed silk against your skin, where the clouds are like frosting coating the sky in strips.
It was just like last May, when he came home from work and found her on a sugar high from too much lemonade on the back porch. She was on the phone with her mama, happy and chatting and turning red from laughter. In that moment, he saw her soulful hazel eyes and her messy blonde hair. He watched how her eyebrows crinkled when she giggled and how she crossed her legs like a pretzel on that white wicker chair. He couldn’t stop himself from pulling the ring box out of his jacket and bending down on one knee. He watched her as she stopped mid-sentence, how she whispered, “Oh my goodness mama”, and how she squealed yes and jumped up and in to his arms.
This antique Victorian opal and diamond cluster ring was handcrafted in 15 karat gold. It was made circa 1890 in England. The oval opal in the center measures 6.7 x 5.1 x 2.6 mm. A cluster of 10 sparkling diamonds surround the almost luminescent opal. This ring is a lovely size 9.25 and weighs 4.7 grams. The face of the ring measures 11.9 x 10.6 x 6.6 mm off the finger. The band width is 2.7 mm. This piece is unmarked and has been acid tested to verify content.

She just wanted to do whatever. So she put on her baggy jeans, favorite t-shirt, and opal necklace. Comfy. Cute. She spent the morning finishing a Kerouac novel in her bright blue bean bag chair. For lunch, she dined on vanilla ice cream with sprinkles and sipped on black coffee. She read the paper, then walked about town. She popped in at the local coffee shop and ordered a double espresso while making eyes at the cute barista. She bought herself flowers and a vase to go with them. She strolled through the park, smelling her daisies, watching the birds, listening to the pond, chatting with strangers. It was well after dark before she went back home. She stopped at looked in the mirror that hung in her entry way. She was smiling, grinning ear to ear, holding a bouquet, wearing her favorite necklace. She was content.
This beautiful antique silver gilt and opal necklace was handcrafted around 1900. It is 16 inches in length and weighs 13.7 grams. This darling necklace features six precious opals displayed at the front with each measuring approximately 7.5 x 5.5 mm. It’s an elegant design held together with the extra help of a safety chain. The main feature measures 36 x 28.7 x 6.5 mm. There are no marks and it has been acid tested.
There’s something about opals. Maybe it’s their play of color. Maybe it’s their likeness to fireworks. Either way, they sure look fabulous on a necklace of silver gilt, preferably wrapped around your neck, and paired with some cute shoes.

I think it’s time to take a day off and play hooky from work, from life, from responsibility. Head to the desert, where the desert lily and the wool star live, where the horizon looks like the opals on your ring, all color all the time. I recommend the McDonald Observatory (nebula through a good telescope have a surprising amount of opalescence) and dinner at Kaedama. Bring a friend or travel solo, either way, just go, and take this ring with you.
This astonishing antique opal and diamond gold ring was handcrafted around 1900. There are five oval cabochon precious opals that make up the petals of a pansy or forget-me-not flower with a diamond at the center and five more diamonds for extra sparkle, all set in 14 karat gold. This ring has truly lovely opals, and they are very well matched so I suspect they are all original to the ring. They’re giving off neon shades of pink, green, blue, and more, accenting the glittery diamonds just perfectly. The five opals weigh a total of approximately 2.09 carats. The center diamond measures 2.7 mm in diameter and 1.5 mm in depth, it weighs approximately .07 carats. The other five diamonds total approximately .05 carats. The ring face measures 17.4 x 16.8 x 3.5 mm and the band width is 1.6 mm at the back. This ring is a size 6.5 and it weighs 3.1 grams. It has been acid tested.
It’s time to treat yourself to some jewels, might I suggest this marvelous masterpiece of a ring? I think I shall.
A note from Victoria: Opals sometimes get a bad rap as being a fragile stone. Mostly this is because they can get brittle if they dry out, they love to be worn as the humidity from your finger is enough to prevent this. If you live in a dry climate, it’s best to keep your opal in a sealed plastic baggie when it’s not on your finger. Better yet, just wear it all the time!!

There are some cultures that say that opals were formed when the an angry god hurled a rainbow at the earth and it shattered. In the place where the pieces landed, opals were formed. Looking deeply into this stunning opal ring makes it easy for one to believe that this is true.
This antique Victorian opal solitaire gold ring was handcrafted in England around 1890. It features a rectangle cabochon precious opal at the center. The opal measures 11.4 x 8.7 x 2.3 mm. It’s set in 18 karat gold and has been acid tested. The ring face measures 18.4 x 18.1 x 6.7 mm off the finger and the band width is 2.6 mm at the back. This ring is a size 7.75 and it weighs 4.7 grams.
“Precious opals” are known for their diffraction of light, called ‘play of color’, in which rainbow colors shine from inside the stone like a kaleidoscope of firelight. The play-of-color in precious opals is caused by the diffraction of light that bounces between the silica spheres that are stacked like microscopic marbles in a box.

Her curtains were pulled aside, revealing a black night sky, without a star or moon in sight. The wind was heard but she was busy, writing, passionately creating a story of mythical creatures and happy endings. The flicker of candlelight emanated from the tall dark red candlesticks burning in the corner. The flame’s light hit the ring on her right hand, the hand scribbling wildly with a feather quill on thick parchment. The ring glowed as though she had the sun hidden somewhere inside of it. Her content ginger cat sat on the edge of her oak desk, watching the specks of light that jumped from the prismatic opals on her ring to the darkened walls of the library, like a kaleidoscope.
This vintage English Art Deco ring was handcrafted in London, in 1925. There are five luminescent round cabochon opals set on a square face. This gorgeous 18 karat gold piece is truly Art Deco in its display with dazzling colors, and geometric shape. It is fully hallmarked and bears the crown for England, leopard head for London, the gold purity mark, ‘18’, and the date letter, ‘k’. This ring is a size 5.75 and weighs 4.5 grams.

The Arts and Crafts movement in England began as a response to the Industrial Revolution and the mechanization of the decorative arts. It bloomed into one of the most enduring legacies of style to come out of the 19th and 20th centuries. Something about the return to hand crafting and the motifs of the natural world speaks to the very root of human nature.
This wonderful brooch was handcrafted in London around 1900-10, and was most likely done by Henry George Murphy. Anchored by a beautiful large opal gem, this brooch is framed in 15 karat gold with a scroll and foliate design. This rectangular brooch holds a large cabochon precious opal which measures 30 x 20 x 7 mm and weighs approximately 23 carats. Precious opals are known for their diffraction of light, called ‘play of color’, in which rainbow colors shine from inside the stone like a kaleidoscope of firelight. Overall, this piece measures 39.7 x 27.6 mm and it weighs 60.8 grams. It has been acid tested. This brooch comes in an antique box which reads, “Gieves 27 Old Bond Street London, W.I.”, most likely it’s not original to the brooch but it has kept it in good order over the years.
Henry George Murphy was part of the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London and later went on to become a silversmith of some renown, working mostly in the Art Deco style.
For all occasions and even non-occasions. This brooch is sheer perfection, it gives off color no matter where you are.

It was pinned in the center of her shirt collar, giving the white blouse a touch of shining silver. Her hair was parted down the center, it was long and sandy blonde. She sipped her coffee from a glass mug at a small café somewhere in central London, with red bistro chairs and wooden tables. She was reading a book of French poetry, as a sophisticated woman does. Passersby did double takes before walking on, as she looked like a celebrity hiding in plain sight.

I simply could not resist the amazing style of this phenomenal 1960s bracelet! To be honest, I didn't even really try. It is just so beautifully made that I at first mistook it for a much earlier piece. Each plaque is hand crafted and shows a great degree of skill and an eye for style that brings to mind the designs of the cosmos. Each is set with a glowing round cabochon opal and two bright fuchsia rubies, like little ringed planets circling in their own orbits.
The panels are hand crafted of glowing yellow 9 karat gold in a fabulous sort of undulating shape, and each has fantastic details, including a full back frame to hold the bracelet up off of the wrist for an optimal play of light when it's worn. Each plaque is marked with a '9' and '375' for 9 karat gold and it also bears hallmarks indicating that it was made in London in 1969. It weighs 26.8 grams and measures 8 inches long. The plaques are 17 mm long each and 17.7 mm wide and it sits 6.5 mm off the wrist. Each of the 10 opals are 0.14 carat each for a total weight of 1.4 carats. The 20 rubies add up to about .40 carats total.
This is the kind of fantastic vintage jewel that can be worn so easily, that it can go from Barbecue to Black Tie!!

Precious opals are known for their diffraction of light, called ‘play of color’, in which rainbow colors shine from inside the stone like a kaleidoscope of firelight. This pink precious opal does just that in a mesmerizing fashion.
Opals have been used in jewelry as far back as 4000 BC, in Kenya. They were worn in Ancient Rome and considered to hold all the power of every gemstone because of the opal’s magical play of every color. The Romans called this stone, ‘opalus’, which means ‘stone of several elements’. In 75 AD, the Roman scholar Pliny took note, “Some opali carry such a play within them that they equal the deepest and richest colors of painters. Others simulate the flaming fire of burning sulfur and even the bright blaze of burning oil.”
This pink precious opal ring was handcrafted during the Arts and Crafts movement in the Edwardian Era, around 1910. This piece is European, likely Belgian. The pink opal is oval and an ellipsoid or double cabochon. It measures 11 x 8 x 5.9 mm. It is set in 18 karat gold on a size 8 band. This ring weighs 4.2 grams. It is hallmarked with the gold purity mark, ‘18CT’. The ring face measures 11.5 x 9.3 x 6.2 mm off the finger with a band width of 2.4 mm.
Most of the world’s opals are found in Australia. There is an Aboriginal legend that says opals came from where the Creator touched his feet to the ground as he descended from the heavens on a rainbow.

I try not be gem-ist, that is prejudiced against or towards one gem or another. I really do love them all (okay, I’m not huge on Tanzanite, sorry!). In truth, I have a weakness for a fine specimen of any type; yet still, I find myself more and more susceptible to the ever exotic and sublime Opal. Not only are they beautiful, they are also pretty cool. Did you know that Opals are the result of ancient rain? The seasonal rains of the worlds semi-desert places create opals by carrying dissolved silica deep into the earth where it forms deposits in the cracks between layers of sedimentary rock. Imagine that, ancient rain, that you can wear on your finger!?
This fantastic Opal has a magnificent play of color and is cut in a tantalizing cabochon marquise. It’s blues and greens, oranges, yellows and reds can be seen dancing and glimmering in any light, from any angle. The luminous gem is set within a frame of Old European cut diamonds, 20 in all, which weigh approximately .05 carats each and add up to a total weight of 1 carat. The opal measures 13.5x6x4.1 mm and weighs approximately 1.5 carats. The overall ring measures 19.8 mm north to south and 11.6 mm across and sits 6.5 mm off the finger.
This hand crafted Edwardian stunner was beautifully made with a lovely looping gallery, most likely it is English and dates to about 1910. It is unmarked but tests as platinum in multiple spots. This size 6.4 ring could be re-sized to suit a new wearer, it weighs 2.8 grams.
This intriguing ring would make a fantastic engagement ring for that luminous lady in your life who is looking for something to match her style!
A note about opals: Due to their high moisture content, opals should be protected from drying out, they love to be worn as they get humidity from your skin, but when your not wearing them, it's best to keep them in a sealed plastic baggie!

I was wandering New Bond Street, with an Everbean coffee in hand, and frosted gluten free coffee cake in the other. I was enjoying the early morning briskness as I waltzed in to one of my favorite hidden gems of an antique store. After trying on too many tweed jackets from the 70’s, and shopping the shoe section for far too long (the brown leather go-go boots were to die for), the owner pulled out a silk drawstring bag. Between your basic gold bands, a silver bauble or two, and a few loose garnets, was this stunner. I slipped it on and wore it for the next week. I had to test it out before selling it to you, I am a professional, after all.
This antique Edwardian ring was handcrafted in England around 1910. It showcases a lively display of three opals patterned with four diamonds set in 18 karat gold. Each of the opals are cabochon cut, with the center stone measuring 5.3 x 4.3 x 1.5 mm. The diamonds are each rose cuts and measure about 1 mm in diameter. The ring face measures 7.6 x 16 x 3.5 mm off the finger and the band with is 1.7 mm at the back. It weighs 2.4 grams and is a size 6.75. It bears the gold purity mark, “18” and the anchor mark indicating it was made in Birmingham, England.
Opal ring goes great with coffee, lunch dates, occasions with frilly dresses, and of course, simple white fitted t-shirts topped off with a smile.

I was reading an article the other day reported on studies done in Finland which show that love and happiness make you physically warm. If that's true, then just think of all the money you'll save on heat with this fabulous Fire Opal on your finger to keep you happy. I freely admit to being just a little bit in love with this fiery beauty. Yup, warm all over!
This Edwardian stunner was hand-crafted in 18 karat gold with diamonds set in sterling silver. The Fire Opal is an oval faceted natural gem which measures 9.7 mm from North to South and 8.2 mm across and is 6 mm deep; its approximate weight is 2 carats. The stone is very clean and clear for a fire opal with some very tiny surface abrasions only visible under magnification. The rich candy-orange kissed with red opal is complemented by its contrasting halo of old European cut diamonds. The 12 diamonds measure on average 3 mm across and 2 mm deep and weigh .15 carats, for about 1.5 carats of total diamond weight. The diamonds are very bright, white and well color matched; they are clean stones with small to medium sized culets. The ring is currently a size 7.25 but could be resized up or down to suit by a skilled jeweler, it weighs 3.5 grams. The ring is unmarked but has been carefully acid tested to verify content. Made in Europe in about 1910.
Why this ring? Because... baby, it's cold outside!

The stirring colors of sultry opal have a definite understated star quality. When you set beautifully matched and graduated opals into a delicate and yet grand crescent brooch, the result is an unexpected and elegant thing indeed.

This brooch has a small hanger on the back to turn it into a pendant if the wearer would like. It measures 33.6 mm top to bottom and 32 mm across, it’s 6.4 mm deep and weighs 6.2 grams. 'All of Nature’s splendor seems to be reflected in the manifold opulence of fine Opals: fire and lightnings, all the colors of the rainbow and the soft shine of far seas. Its origins go back to a time long before our memory, to the ancient dream time of the Australian aborigines. It is reported in their legends that the creator came down to Earth on a rainbow, in order to bring the message of peace to all the humans. And at the very spot, where his foot touched the ground, the stones became alive and started sparkling in all the colors of the rainbow. That was the birth of the Opals.' - ICGA website
These Opals are spectacular. Let me just say off the batt that I am not an Opal expert, but I find myself more and more drawn to their subdued charm. This Opal ring took me completely by surprise. It is a lovely but fairly typical five stone Victorian ring (sometimes called a Half Hoop), but there is nothing typical at all about these stones. When I put it on my hand I noticed right away that these lovely crystal opals had great fire and play of color, the colors changing from calm reds, oranges and blues to bright and flashing bold blues and greens. The most amazing thing, though, is the way that these opals appear lit from within. That is not some trick of photography or light, it is simply the brilliance and fire of these stones, they almost seem to provide their own light.
This is a truly lovely hand made English Victorian ring, all set in 18 karat gold. The opals weigh approximately 3.3 carats all together, the center stone measures 7.4 x 5.4 x 2.8 mm, the inner sides measure 6.4 x 4.5 x 2.3 mm, and the outer sides measure 5 x 4.5 x 2.5 mm. The overall measurements are 8 mm north to south, 19.5 mm across and the ring sits 5.3 mm off the finger. The ring is currently a size 8, this style is difficult but not impossible to re-size, but if you let me know your desired size, I'd be happy to find out if it could be re-sized for you. This unmarked ring has been acid tested to confirm the gold content, it weighs 3.3 grams.

Steam rose from the surface of my coffee mug as I perched it on the edge of the windowsill. The panes were foggy with the heat of the winter morning. Snow touched the ground that night, leaving a soft sprinkling of flakes on the still green grass. I watched as the sun rose through the pristine pink of the sky, I felt the coolness of my ring on my finger, and smoothness of the gold against my skin. The opals matched the sky, blue, and pink and mesmerizing, mixing with the green of the pines and the orange of the sun. Both were quite a sight to be seen.
